2. ASSESSMENT:
Appeared to be in good physical condition at time of interrogation. Farmers prior to military service with CNA. Surrendered when their unit withdrew from its position. Average intelligence and were cooperative. Information considered fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Unit Organization, Strength and Equipment:
The 50th Army consisted of 148th, 149th and 150th Div.
The 148th Div consisted of 442nd, 443rd and 444th Regt.
The 442nd Regt consisted of three Inf Bn, one Guard Co, one 82mm Mortar Co, one 70mm (?) AT Co, one Sig Plat, one Telephone Plat, one Recon Plat, one Engr Plat, one Political Plat, and one Mountain Gun Btry. (The Political Plat mainly engages in indoctrinating the troops, preparing propaganda leaflets, etc.)
The Guard Co consisted of three Plat.

The 442nd Regt Hq received approx 50 casualties (including a few officers) from UN artillery fire 27 Jan 51.
The Mountain Gun Btry had four US 75mm guns.
The 82mm Mortar Co had 6 x 82mm mortars.
The 70mm AT Co had two Japanese 70mm AT guns.
The Guard Co had 6 Canadian LMG and approx 20 Chinese rifles.
The Recon Plat had 30 US cal .45 pistols.
The Engr Plat had a number of shovels, picks, carpenter tools, and TNT blocks.

b. Unit Assignment and Intentions:
29 Jan 51 heard from Regt Comdr that 50th Army’s assignment was to stop the UN Forces and secure their present positions.
442nd Regt assignment was to defend present position to the last man.

c. Disposition:
8 Feb 51, 442nd Regt CP was located on the south slope of KWANAK-SAN (CS1946)
1st Bn CP was located 2 km north of 442nd Regt CP.
2nd Bn was located 2 - 4 km east of Regt CP and 3rd Bn was located 2 - 4 km west of Regt CP.

d. Communications:
Communication between Regt and Div was by wireless (Japanese) and runners. Communication between Regt and Bn and Co were done mainly by telephone (US, Japanese and Chinese make). Flares, rifle shots, and bugles were also used for communication.

e. Personalities:
YANG, Ping (楊濱) Lt Col, CO, 442nd Regt

f. Morale:
Morale in unit was extremely low due to the following reasons:
(1) 25% of the troops in the unit were former CNA soldiers and detested communism.
(2) Most of the officers do not keep their word and give false information.
(3) Equipment was not only critical, but also inferior compared to that of the UN forces.

g. Chronology:
Both PW are former CNA soldiers who were captured and integrated into CCF in Feb 50. The 442nd Regt crossed YALU River Oct 50 at TUNGKANG (BA6656). Arrived P’YONGYANG in Dec 50. Took secondary roads and travelled only during nights. Arrived SEOUL Jan 51. Crossed HAN River and arrived YONGDUNGPO (CS1553). Unit advanced approx 2 km south of YONGDUNGPO where their unit fought the withdrawing UN forces for 3 days. Rested for approx 7 days, then moved south to vic 20 km south of SUWON, arriving 2 Feb 51. Withdrew to vic KWANAK-SAN (CS1946) after receiving heavy arty barrage 5 Feb 51. Captured in vic KWANAK-SAN 8 Feb 51.

h. Food and Ammo Supplies:
Food supplies were procured from local villages. Troops were fed an average of twice a day. Food supplies were insufficient.
Received only 2 hand grenades and were not issued any weapons. Weapon and ammunition were critical.

i. UN PW:
Observed approx 300 US PW being marched towards MACHURIA at MANP’OJIN (BA7259) 2 Oct 50.

j. Medical:
Did not receive any immunization. Severe frostbite was common among the troops. No treatment was given.

k. HAN River crossing:
PW unit crossed the HAN River over the ice. No special bridging equipment was observed.

l. Effectiveness of Night Bombing:
Their unit was subjected to night bombing several times, but they did not know the number of casualties.

4. REMARKS:
PW were previously interrogated by the 25th Div IPW Team.
