FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI SPECIAL REPORT NO NUMBER) 23 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Source cooperative in answering questions and information seems fairly reliable, but tactical information is limited because he was trying to avoid the enemy after escape.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
14 Feb 51 source and 24 other ROK soldiers were captured by NK troops at WONJU-GUN, HAKKON-RI, 20 km NE of WONJU.
15 Feb 51 source and a ROK HCO were taken to HAIL-LI (DS2831), 15 km NW of CHUCH’ON.
16 Feb 51 source and one other ROK PW were taken to KANGNIM (DS2335), approx 17 km north of CHUCH’ON.
17 Feb 51 interrogated by an officer of Recon Unit of V Corps concerning composition, strength, supply, etc of 5th ROK Div.
20 Feb 51, night, escaped at KOIL (DS2933), approx 13 km N of CHUCH’ON and surrendered to UN troops 2 km N of CHUCH’ON-NI (DS3524) 23 Feb 51.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Source identified the unit making capture as Recon Unit, V NK Corps by conversing with one of its soldiers. Unit had only 7 or 8 soldiers armed with SMG and rifles.
19 Feb 51 source, one ROK NCO, 2 NK soldiers, 2 NK officers, one agent and 2 laborers were at CHUCH’ON-NI, due to UN Arty fire, they retreated to KANNIM-NI (DS2335), approx 16 km N of CHUCH’ON-NI.
While retreating observed approx 1,000 or more enemy troops armed with PPsh SMG and rifles, retreating toward N at KOIL-LI area (DS2933). Also observed approx 100 casualties.
Heard from a soldier that they were to regroup at KANNIM-NI and take rest.
15 Feb 51 observed approx 300 NK soldiers armed with PPsh SMG and rifles coming into PUGOK village, approx 6 km S of KANNIM-NI.
16 Feb 51 observed approx 500 NK troops armed with PPsh SMG or rifles at KANNIM-NI marching south. On the same day, observed approx 300 guerrillas (30% wore uniforms and others had on civilian clothing) armed with PPsh SMG and rifles at KANNIM-NI. Heard from soldier guarding him that they are members of guerrilla unit.
17-18 Feb 51 observed approx 500 to 600 Nk troops who had PPsh SMG and rifles moving S in groups of 30 to 40 between HAIL-LI and CHUCH’ON.
18 Feb 51 heard from a soldier 6th and 7th Div under V Corps and are located at CHUCH’ON area, but believed all retreated North.
21 Feb 51 observed approx 60 NK troops armed with PPsh SMG and rifles in the village of TOGON-NI (DS34.7-28.4), approx 8 km N of CHUCH’ON-NI.
15 Feb 51 observed 2 or 3 CCF without any arms at PUGOK-NI, 20 km NW of CHUCH’ON-NI. Also heard from the soldiers guarding him that large numbers of CCF troops with HMG and mortars moving S toward SHILIM-NI.
