Cooperative and answered freely. Information seems fairly reliable.
19 Feb 51, PW unit engaged in battle 16 Km E of WONJU. Unit was defeated and retreated Northward. During the confusion, PW thought of surrendering to the UN Forces. Deserted 19 Feb 51 and captured by UN forces 22 Feb 51.
a. Chronology
16 Feb 51, 7th Div departed HONGCH’ON and arrived vic of CHONGBAU (DS2334) 18 Feb 51 with the intention of setting up defensive positions. Unit’s mission was also to secure and set up a road block in a road located West of CHONGBAU. While on the move, observed elements of 12th Div moving in the same direction, south, with 7th Div and PW believes that 12th Div mission was the same as 7th Div.
19 Feb 51, both 7th and 12th Div attacked by UN Forces before they could set up their defensive positions. After a 2 hour engagement, 7th Div retreated northward. At that time, PW pretended that he couldn’t walk so the Culture Officer told him to join his unit about 40 km N of CHONGBAU in the vic of HOENGSONG. Observed 12th Div in full retreat headed north of CHONGBAU.
b. T/O & E
Strength of the regt unknown but each of the Bn in the regt had 300 men. Weapons in the 3rd Bn were as follows:
4 x 82mm Mortars
6 HMG (200 rd per)
15 LMG (200 rd per)
6 PPSH SMG per plat. (150 rd per)
The infantrymen all carried Russian rifles (70 rd per).
6th Div was at rest at HONGCHON from 8 Feb 51 till the time 7th Div departed.
8 Feb 51, heard from his plat ldr that the NKA was preparing for the 4th Phase of Operation.
10 Feb 51, observed a sign in HONGCH’ON that read “III CORPS ADVANCE CP”. PW talked to a soldier from the III Corps 15th Div.
c. Clothing:
All troops wore winter clothing.
d. Medical:
One man from PW Co contracted an unknown contagious disease. Symptoms - high fever and chills. This man was given an unknown immunization.
e. Physical Condition:
Many men from unit suffered from frostbite.
f. Food:
Troops ate 2 meals a day and always complained about food not being enough.
g. Morale:
Morale was low because they had no air and artillery support.
