FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI - 0231) 23 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: CHUN, Sam Su

DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 211200 Feb 51 at 23rd Inf, 2nd Bn Sector
INTERROGATOR: Pfc AKASHI

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative but since he deserted unit six days ago he does not know the present disposition or their plans. Information obtained fairly reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
7th Div with its three regt (1000 men each) and artillery regt (500 men) advanced south with 1st Regt leading. Mission of this unit was to get behind UN lines, which were already broken and capture UN troops which were surrounded, unorganized, scattered and in a state of confusion. This mission was not accomplished because they made contact with the UN Forces and fought three days of losing battle. The unit broke contact and headed North. Co CO said that they were going 30 km north to rest.

b. Weapons: (Automatic Weapon Co)
4 x 82mm Mortars (total-40 rd) Attached unit from div carried ammo.
3 x 45 (50)mm Mortars (total 100 rd)
3 Anti Tank Rifles (Regt) (total 200 rd)
3 HMG
10 LMG

c. Clothing - All issued winter uniforms and blankets.

d. Food - Sufficient when fed but at times troops were not fed for two-three days.

e. Morale - Low, because of heavy artillery bombardment. Troops are afraid.

f. Medical - No immunizations given. No disease.

g. Physical Condition - Good. Some were weak but forced to walk. After complete exhaustion, men are carried by someone in the sqd.

h. Communication - Telephone used to communicate between Bn-Bn-Regt. 2 wireless sets observed by PW at Regt Hq. English conversation heard over wireless set.

i. Shelter - Even though houses are available in villages troops did not stay in houses during the day, but at night utilized all available shelter.

j. 4th Phase Operations - It was stated by the Co CO that the 4th Phase offensive already started. In preparation for this offensive, units received replacements and ammo hidden in HOENG-SONG. This ammo was hidden in bottom of dry steams. PW does not know when it was hidden but states that he observed many metal containers buried, filled with ammo.
