FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI 0230) 23 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: CHA, Chong Man
AGE: 23
RANK: Pfc
DUTY: Laborer
UNIT: 12th Div, 2nd Regt, 1st Bn
DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 221500 Feb 51 at vic 16 Km N of CHECHON
INTERROGATOR: Sgt KITSU

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and answered freely. Information seems fairly reliable.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
Captured by CCF 2 Jan 51 at KAPYONG then transferred to NKA training Bn 6 Jan 51. PW assigned to 12th Div as a laborer. When unit went to vic 16 Km North of CHECHON, PW and another ROK soldier escaped and surrendered to UN Forces. There were about 50 former ROK soldiers being used as laborers in 12th Div, 2nd Regt. No weapons issued to these men.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
16 Feb 51, 12th Div departed vic of HOENGSONG and arrived at vic 16 Km E of CHECHON 17 Feb 51. 12th Div objective was PYONGCHANG but before reaching their objective, they were to attack UN and ROKA Forces that 12th Div confronted. Heard from sqd ldr that this move of 12th Div was a step taken before 4th Phase Operations began. Also heard that 4th Phase Operations would commence after the NKA occupied ANDONG.

b. T/O & E and Strength:
Elements of 12th Div were the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Regt (2000 men per regt) and a Reserve Bn (approx 1000 men).
Weapons observed in the 2nd Regt, 1st Bn were:
3x81mm Mortars (15 rd per)
HMG (500 rd)
3 LMG (ammo unk)
8 PPSH SMG per Co (500 rd per)
All others armed with Russian rifles (200 rd per).
16 Feb 51, observed 7th Div travelling S from HEONGSONG towards WONJU.

c. Clothing:
All NKA troops wore winter clothing.

d. Medical:
Heard of influenza in the 2nd Regt. Patients evacuated to rear.

e. Food:
Food found in villages insufficient. Troops were never satisfied with a day meals.

f. Morale:
Morale was low due to lack of food and continuous marching.

g. Physical Condition:
Many suffered from frostbite but were forced to march and stay with the unit.
