FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI 0208)　24 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: CHUNG Chee Sung
AGE: 18

DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 231800 Feb 51 at SUJU-MYON (DS2428)

2. ASSESSMENT:
Very cooperative and willingly gave information. Seemed intelligent and although information was mostly hearsay, it seems reliable.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
20 Feb 51 arrived in vic of SUJU-MYON (DS2428) and received heavy UN Arty bombardment. Unit stayed on a hill all day but due to continuous bombardment, withdrew towards ANHUNG-NI (DS2540). During the retreat, PW and 5 others deserted and escaped southward and 231800 Feb 51 were captured.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
16 Feb 51, 12th Div departed HOENGSONG and arrived at vic of SUJU-MYON (DS2428) 20 Feb 51. Heard the NKA V Corps went to SUJU-MYON and while on the move, PW heard from the Co Cmdr that mission of 12th Div as well as all the NKA, was to infiltrate US Forces lines and encircle CHECHON and its surrounding areas and also to sever UN MSR.
When 12th Div defeated and retreated from SUJU-MYON, heard from sqd ldr that they were retreating to ANHUNG-NI (DS2540). Also heard that ANHUNG-NI was the assembling and regrouping point for the NKA V Corps. PW heard it on 20 Feb 51.
14 Feb 51, heard from Co CO that they were ordered to attack because preparation for the 4th phase of operation has ended and that the general offensive was about to begin. At that time 12th Div was in vic of HONGCHON. Tanks, planes and arty support were promised but PW did not see any.

b. Organization of Unit:
Elements of 12th Div were the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Regt and Engr Bn, Communication Bn and a Recon Co.

c. Location of Unit:
20 Feb 51 1st Regt CP located at UNHANG-NI (DS2933), 2nd Regt on its east flank and 3rd Regt, east of 2nd Regt. 1st Bn CP of 1st Regt located in vic of HOEBONG-SAN (DS2728).

d. Strength & Weapons:
Strength of the 1st Bn estimated about 300 men. Weapons in the 1st Bn were: 82mm mortar (8 rd), 60mm mortar (42 rd), 3 HMG, 6 LMG per Co (800 rd ea), 11 PPsh SMG per Co (450 rd ea). All others had Russian rifles (100 rd ea), US rifles and carbines.
Telephones used in Bn level for communication.

e. Clothing:
All troops wore winter clothing.

f. Medical:
4 Feb 51 heard of an unk disease spreading among the men in his unit. Symptoms of the disease were: high fever and diarrhea.

g. Food
Insufficient.

h. Morale:
Low, due to lack of food.
