FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI - 0207) 24 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: CHANG Nam Chol

DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 231800 Feb 51 at HAIL-LI (DS 2831)
INTERROGATOR: Pfc MINAMI

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and information seems reliable.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
18 Feb 51, wounded in his back at HAIL-LI (DS2831).
PW unable to walk so stayed in HAIL-LI until his capture 1800 hr 23 Feb 51.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
14 Feb 51, 12th Div consisting of 5,500 men arrived at HAIL-LI from ANHUNG, in vic of DS2644. As soon as dug in on hills located in vicinity of HAIL-LI, they engaged UN Forces for 4 days, but 18 Feb 51, they started to retreat north. PW and other wounded soldiers were told by runner from Div Hq that they were to catch up with their unit at ANHUNG.
18-23 Feb 51, observed approx 200 soldiers of 6th and 7th Div retreating north through HAIL-LI. They PPSH SMG, Soviet rifles, US M-1 Rifles, carbines, 15 LMG, 3 HMG, and a 60mm mortar.

b. Strength & Weapons:
Strength of 2nd Regt of 12th Div was approx 2,700 (as of 10 Feb 51) and weapons were 82mm mortars (20 rd of ammo ea), 60mm mortars (40 rd of ammo ea), 12 HMG (12 cases of ammo per), 7 PPSH SMG (500 rd of ammo per) in each Plat and every one had rifles with 200 rd of ammo (Soviet rifles, US Rifles, and US carbines) and 2 hand grenades each.

c. Mission:
Heard from Co Cmdr that mission was to occupy ANDONG and advance south.

d. Ammo:
9 Feb 51 received 230 rd of rifle ammo at ANHUNG (heard from his Plat Ldr that ammo was sent from CHINA).

e. Food:
Obtained from villages was sufficient.

f. Clothing:
Everyone wore winter uniforms and Chinese made shoes.

g. Physical Condition:
Poor, because of fatigue. 10 % of Regt were suffering from frostbite.

h. Medical:
Did not hear of or observe any contagious diseases in his unit.

i. Morale:
Low, because of air and Arty bombardment and insufficient sleep.
