FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI 0206) 23 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative but were not very intelligent. Not familiar with place names and seemed confused in directions. Information fairly reliable except for localities and directions of units.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
Both PW captured by CCF 25 and 26 Nov 50 at YONGWON. 28 Nov 50, transferred to NKA 6th Div, Replacement Bn. Received communist training for 1 week (4 hr per day). 12 Dec 50 assigned to 6th Div, 13th Regt, 3rd Bn, HMG Co at YANGDOK (NK). Unit then advanced S and engaged in battle at WONJU and HOENGSONG. After resting for about a month, 6th Div departed vic of HOENGSONG and arrived 16 km N of CHECH’ON 18 Feb 51. Upon arrival on a hill, unit confronted by a UN Force and after being defeated, 6th Div retreated. During retreat, PW escaped and were later captured by UN Forces.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
One of the PW stated that elements of 6th Div were the 1st, 13th and 15th Regt, while the other PW mentioned the 617th, 659th and 661st Units. Mission of 6th Div was to capture ANDONG on the first step towards the 4th phase of operation.
When 6th Div was in battle and defeated 20 Feb 51 by the UN Forces at Hill 919 (DS3517), Div retreated Northwards. Heard that 6th Div was going to retreat to their former location in vic of HOENGSONG. PW followed the retreating 6th Div for a few miles then turned back on the same road attempting to escape. In trying to avoid NKA soldiers, PW changed course and accidentally stumbled upon an element of the NKA 7th Div 221900 Feb 51 at vic 20 km NNE of CHECH’ON. Upon conversing with the soldiers, the PW found out that these troops belonged to the 7th Div, 2nd Regt, Security Plat.

b. Strength & Weapons:
Strength of 13th Regt unk but each Bn had 300 men. Weapons in 3rd Bn were: 2x82mm mortars (24 rd per), 2x60mm mortars, 2 HMG (2000 rd per), 8 LMG per Co (2 magazines per), 12 PPSH SMG per Co (2 magazines per), Anti-tank rifle. All troops had US rifles and Russian made rifles (100 rd per).

c. Clothing:
Three-fourths of the troops wore winter uniforms, while others had summer uniforms.

d. Medical:
None among troops but PW observed typhus cases among civilians in vic of HOENGSONG.

e. Physical Condition:
Troops were in poor health due to lack of sleep and long marches.

f. Food:
Unit received no food supply but food found in villages was sufficient.

g. Morale:
Morale was high for the men believed in propaganda passed on to them.
