ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 3835　6 March 1951

FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI 0200)　16 February 1951

Very cooperative and answered questions freely. Seemed intelligent. Information seems reliable. Not familiar with Korean place names.

151500 Feb 51, deserted from unit and surrendered.

116th Div, comprised of the 346th, 347th and 348th Regt, arrived vic 5 km N of CS8338 13 Feb 51. Heard from a political officer that the objective of 116th Div was to set up a road block 5 km NNE of CS8338 and cut off a Regiment of UN Forces. Strength of Div estimated about 10,000 men (sic).

39th CCF Army had 115th, 116th and 117th Div. Two other Div were in the same area because troops of unknown units were in the vic.

346th Regt, about 2,400 men, had 3 Bn (each bn about 460 men), a mortar Co, Comm Co, Training Co, and a Security Co.

Mortar Co had 4 x 82mm mortars (100 rd ea) and the men had Japanese M38 rifles (100 rd ea) and US Carbines (150 rd ea). Mortar Co was always in the same area as 346th Regt Hq (located approx 5 km N of CS8338).

Observed the following weapons in 3rd Bn of 346th Regt: 2 x 82mm mortars (100 rd), 6 x 60mm mortars (80 rd per), 4 HMG (US; 1,000 rd ea), 18 LMG (Canadian; 600 rd per), 6 US M-1 rifles per plat (150 rd ea).

The Infantrymen had Japanese 38 rifles (80 rd per) and each man carried 4 hand grenades.

347th and 348th Regt believed to be to the rear of 346th Regt.

Unknown whether the 4th phase of operation begun or not.

All troops in 116th Div wore cotton quilted winter uniforms.

d. Medical: Neither saw nor heard of any contagious diseases. All troops in 116th Div received immunizations about 3 months ago. Effect was headache and sore arm for few days.

Men all seemed in good health.

Received no food supply but food found in village was plentiful.

morale was low due to long marches at night, and digging fox-holes. Men hardly slept at night. This was the reason why PW escaped from his unit and surrendered to the UN Forces. Practically all the men were forced to fight by the officers. PW believes that surrender leaflets dropped on the CCF troops will not be of any help because the officers would stop the men from reading them.
