FIELD REPORT (I CORPS IPW 28) 6 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: HSU Ti Ming (徐德明)

UNIT: CCF 50th Army, 148th Div, 444th Regt, 2nd Bn, 5th Co, 2nd plat
DATE AND PLACE OF CAPTURE: At vic ANYANG-NI (CS1837) 051000 Feb 51

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW in good physical condition at time of interrogation. Formerly in CNA and was integrated into the CCF in Sep 49. Cooperative and of average intelligence. Information obtained is considered fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Unit Organization:
50th Army composed of 148th, 149th and 150th Div. The 148th Div was composed of the 442nd, 443rd and the 444th Regt. 444th Regt composed of 3 Rifle Bn. 2nd Bn composed of 3 Rifle Co and HMG Co. 5th Co composed of 3 Rifle Plat and 60mm Mortar Plat. 2nd Plat, 5th Co, composed of 3 Rifle Sqd.
HMG Co had 3 HMG and 60mm Mortar Plat had 2x60mm mortars.

PW had knowledge of the following code numbers:
50th Army - 57th Unit
148th Div - 1st Bn
444th Regt - 3rd Co
2nd Bn, 444th Regt - 2nd Plat
5th Co, 2nd Bn - 5th Sqd

d. Unit Assignment and Mission:
PW unit was to advance to vic ANYANG-NI (CS1837)

e. Communication:
Radios and telephones used for communication between Regt and Div Hq. Telephones used between Regt and Bn and runners used between Bn and Co.

f. Personalities:
YEH Chen-shen (葉陳生), Maj, 2nd Bn CO.
LIU (劉), Capt, 5th Co CO.
LIU (劉), 1st Lt, 2nd Plat Ldr

g. Morale:
Unit’s morale low due to the following reasons:
(1) Many are former CNA soldiers and dislike the Communist Army
(2) Fear of air strikes.
(3) Tired of fighting.
(4) Insufficient food and clothing.

h. Chronology:
PW was a farmer prior to his induction into the CNA in Sep 49. In Oct 49, captured by CCF and approx 10 days later was integrated into present unit. In Nov 50, Regt crossed YALU River at ANTUNG. In late Dec 50, unit passed through P’YONGYANG and arrived at SEOUL in early Jan 51. Unit crossed HAN River on foot over the ice in vic SEOUL in Jan 51. 11 Jan 51, PW unit arrived at PUGONG-NI (CS1734). Following day his unit marched approx 10 km W from this position and stayed there for approx 15 days and rested. 27 Jan 51, unit advanced to SARI-SAN (CS1435) and remained there until 2 Feb 51. Regt (444th) was attacked at this location and was dispersed. PW escaped with 100 men to the mountains approx 4 km W of SARISAN. Captured with 2 others a few days later.

i. Food and Ammo Supplies:
Food was insufficient and was procured locally. Received 2 meals a day. Received one issue of 60 rd of ammo prior to crossing the Korean border. Clothing was never issued since the unit came to KOREA. New shoes were issued approx a week ago and each squad received four pairs.

j. Psychological Warfare:
PW saw surrender leaflets twice after crossing the HAN River. Understood the contents of leaflets and wanted to surrender but did not have the opportunity. Heard his friends say that the leaflets were true and that they wanted to surrender.

k. Effectiveness of Night Bombing:
PW unit was never subjected to night air attacks.

l. Medical:
Did not receive any immunizations since crossing the border. Approx 1% of his unit had malaria and trench foot. No knowledge of typhus in his unit.
