ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 3824　6 March 1951

FIELD REPORT (3rd DIV IPW No. 040)　4 February 1951

31 Jan 51 PW and his squad were dispatched from 8th Co to a position 800 meters S of 8th Co. Prior to that he and his squad read American leaflets and planned to surrender. 3 Feb 51 when attacked, he sent one soldier out to show sign of surrender but he was shot. He went out next and surrendered his entire squad.

a. Unit Identification: 50th Army, 149th Div, 445th Regt, 3rd Bn, 8th Co, 1st plat, 2nd Squad.

He heard from mass personnel that 3rd Bn hq was approx 5 km NNW CS 319388 of position CS327344 where he was captured.

445 Regt Hq was approx 4 km NW of PA■■■ORI CS 321391.

d. Mission of PW unit the 8th Co was to hold position 327344 no matter what the cost might be.

e. 2 recoiless gun in 445th Regt (about 50mm). Type similar to American recoiless gun.

2x50mm mortar used at Co level.

82mm mortar used at Regt level.

f. Heard from 8th Co CO that units which had been in combat ever since arriving in KOREA are taking 2 months period to re-equip. The 38th, 39th, 40th and 42nd Armies are in the above process. Exact location is unknown but stated that it is being done in the vicinity of SEOUL. The 50th Army is in battle at present because this was its first engagement.

The soldiers in the Reconnaissance unit wore civilian clothes when out on a Reconnaissance mission. The Recon unit soldiers had carbines, automatic weapons and light machine guns. Weapons are carried within civilian clothes when going out on a patrol.
