FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MIDI - 0293) 18 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Unfamiliar with place names and unable to furnish directions and routes. Information obtained was limited, although considered reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Served in the CNA for about one year. Dec 48, integrated into CCF at MUKDEN, MANCHURIA.
25 Oct 50, 38th Army crossed the YALU River by train into KOREA.
13 Dec 50, elements of 334th Regt engaged ROK troops near CHONSAN-NI, with the 334th Regt suffering an estimated 100 casualties. O/a 20 Dec 50, when another battle ensued in the same vicinity, 112th Div captured approximately ten US and 20 ROK PW.
Advancing southward thereafter, the division arrived 8 km N of SEOUL where the unit remained until 1 Feb 51. The division then started a drive southeast, arriving vic PONGAN (CS487543) 3 Feb 51. Same day, 334th Regt, separating from the division, arrived at a hill approx 4 km SW of PONGAN. Below this hill, a large concentration of 42nd Army troops were observed. After the 334th Regt was attacked by UN forces, it withdrew to a point 4 km NE of PONGAN, being replaced by elements of the 42nd Army. 13 Feb, regiment again advanced southward, arriving at PONGAN, 3rd Bn, after crossing the HAN River, passed through SONGNIMDON (CS484502), and arrived vic (CS573423) 150300 Feb. When the 8th Co and PW HMG Co were heading for a hill (CS579409) to defend it, they were attacked by ROK troops and forced to withdraw. PW lagged behind resulting in his capture.

b. Organization and Strength:
38th Army: 112th, 113th and 114th Div
112th Div: 334th, and two other regiments
334th Regt: 3 battalions, a mortar Co, 2-artillery companies
3rd Bn: 7th, 8th, 9th companies HMG Co
Present strength was approx 300 out of original 500.
HMG Co: 2 HMG Plat, 1 mortar plat, present strength was approx 120 out of original 241.
2nd HMG Plat: originally 3 Sqd, but by the time PW joined unit there were only 2 sqd with present strength of approx 24 out of original 44.

c. Deployment of PW Own Unit:
334th Regt CP located at appoint approx 800 m SW of PONGAN 14 Feb 51. ■■■ Bn located vicinity of (CS572423) 150300 Feb 51.

d. Status of Arms, Ammo, Supply and Equipment:
Observed following weapons in Bn 15 Feb 51.

No resupply of any arms, equipment nor ammunition observed while PW was with unit.

e. Status of Food and Clothing:
While in North KOREA food was not sufficient to feed the men in the unit. However, after the unit entered South KROEA, since the food was looted locally from villagers and farmers, supplies increased sufficiently to adequately feed the unit. Once food supply was made to the unit while they were in the vicinity of SEOUL.
Rubber shoes were issued to the Bn in the vicinity of PONGAN 13 Feb 51.

f. Medical:
No unusual sicknesses or epidemics were noted by PW in his unit. Physical condition was fiarly good.
