FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS - MIDI - 0244) 12 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative, however, seems unobservant. Information considered fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology
Served with CNA for approx 7 yr before being captured by CCF 1 Nov 49 at FUNTEN, MANCHURIA. Then conscripted into 38th CCF Army.
Sep 50, 114th Div of 38th Army departed KAIYUEN, MANCHURIA by train and crossed the YALU River 10 Oct 50. After crossing the YALU River the unit rode the train for approx 5 hr before they stopped. From here unit marched southward on the main road and mountain trails, arriving at TOKCHON (BV6904) 18 Oct 50. Engaged the UN forces for the first time, which lasted for approx 4 days. 22 Oct 50, 114th Div advanced from TOKCHON and arrived at WOLBONG-SAN (BV5303) 30 Oct 50 via KUJANGDONG (BV4607). At WOLBONG-SAN they engaged in another fire fight lasting for approx 3 days. On the third day of the battle 114th Div was ordered to withdraw from WOLBONG-SAN Area to approx 80 Km to the rear. 15 days after arriving at this area the unit again continued their march. Taking the secondary roads and main roads, arriving to TOKCHON 13 Nov 50, vicinity of YONGCHON crossed the HAN River at a place believed to be (CS489528) 4 Feb 51. After crossing the HAN River and travelling for approx 800 meters SE 114th Div was separated by Regt. At the same point 342nd Regt divided by Bn. 3rd Bn arrived at a mountain believed to be Hill 281 o/a 5 Feb. The disposition of other two Bn of the 342nd Regt or Regt of 114th Div was unknown.
7 Feb 51, the 3rd Bn departed the hill retracing the route taken to the place where they crossed the HAN River. At this point the Bn took to the SW to a point 4 Km NE of the hill at CS452428. Here the unit spent 2 days digging foxholes before they were told by their Bn Political Officers that they were to relieve the 2nd Bn who were already defending hill CS452428 and who had fought for approx 2 days. 092200 Feb, 3rd Bn replaced the 2nd Bn.
100700 Feb, the unit engaged the UN forces until 101500 Feb. Co CO gave orders to withdraw. However, the PW instead of going with his unit remained in his foxhole and subsequently surrendered.
Told that the 2nd Bn was part of the 342nd Regt, but has no other confirmatory information.

b. Organization and Strength
342nd Regt had the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Inf Bn, Security Co, Mort Co, and two Arty Co.
3rd Bn had 7th, 8th, 9th Rifle Co, and 3rd HMG Co, which the present strength was believed to be about 300 men at the time of surrender. The Bn original strength when it crossed the YALU River was 500 men. Cause of the decrease in strength was from the severe shelling by artillery and aircraft bombardment.
At the time of surrender the HMG Co strength was believed to be about 100 men whereas the original strength was 150 men.
Estimated there is presently 50-80 men in each rifle Co in the 3rd Bn.

c. Deployment of PW Own Unit
10 Feb 51 3rd Bn CP was in a village approx 1.5 Km N of CS452428 and 342nd Regt was located approx 8 Km North of hill CS452428. This was told by a fellow soldier.

d. Status of Arms and Ammunition
10 Feb 51, HMG Co had 5 HMG plus 2,000 rd each, 2 mortars plus unknown number of shells, 6 pistols, and a bazooka. Each Rifle Co had two 60mm mortars plus unknown number of shells, 2 grenades each man, 30 to 40 Jap M-38 rifles plus 80 to 100 rd each and dynamite charges.
3rd Bn received ammunition twice since crossing the YALU River. Once at the vic of WOLBONG-SAN 4 Not 50 and the other approx 20 Km N of the HAN River 30 Jan 51. Amount of ammunition received was unknown, however HMG Co received 2,000 rd to a HMG at WOLBONG-SAN and 200 rd at the point 20 Km N of the HAN River.

e. Status of Food and Clothing
No clothing on food supplies were received by their unit since crossing the YALU River. Food was usually looted from the villages of the unit’s immediate area.

f. Mission and Intentions
Mission of 3rd Bn was to relieve the 2nd Bn, 342nd Regt and to defend the hill at (CS452428).

g. Physical Condition
Troops were in good physical condition, however there were a few cases of frost-bite and dysentery.

h. Propaganda
Troops of HMG Co received UN Leaflets, however, they did not discuss these leaflets, for fear that they might be reprimanded by their officers. Believes that the majority of the troops have faith in the leaflets and would surrender if they had the opportunity.

i. Road Signs
Road signs for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Bn.
