ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO 3818　6 March 1951

FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MIDI - 0269)　10 February 1951

PW cooperative during interrogation and tried to give whatever information he had. Unobservant and had poor memory for dates and place names. Not recommended for further interrogation.

PW volunteered in CNA 115th Army Nov 1948. Dec 1949, was captured by CCF 50th Army and assigned to the present unit. 29 Nov 50, 449th Regt entered KOREA aboard a train, crossing over the YALU River from ANTUNG, MANCHURIA to SINUIJU, KOREA. The Regt arrived at an unknown mountain south of PAENNA. Proceeding southward, reached vicinity of 38th parallel 29 Dec 50. 6 Jan 51, PW battalion passed SEOUL, and crossed HAN River at night, at approximately 8 km south of city. PW did not observe any vehicles or bridges during the crossing on the frozen HAN River. 4 Jan, the 2nd Bn arrived at hill south of KUNYANGJANG-NI where it remained until 22 Jan. While at this point, engaged in construction defense positions, digging fox holes and trenches. 22 Jan, the battalion withdrew to hill approx 8 km N of KUMYANGJANG-NI. This withdrawal was explained by PW political officer as a necessary measure since an enemy aircraft had spotted them and the position had become precarious. On the same day around 2000 hr, after moving north, the battalion started receiving small arms and artillery fire, which continued until 31 Jan. PW 6th Co suffered approximately fifty casualties from a pre-battle strength of around 100 men. 312000 Jan, the remainder of the 2nd Bn withdrew NW to a point 8 km further from the last location. At this point, the battalion reorganized with what remained of the troops, which resulted in each company having platoons with two squads each. After remaining here for three days, the battalion again moved ENE and arrived Hill 245 (CS427385) 042000 Feb, where it came upon a company strength of unknown troops, which left northward upon the arrival of the battalion. The 2nd Bn remained on Hill 245, when on 061400 Feb, it became the target of opposing artillery twice and was almost completely annihilated. At 061500 Feb, PW surrendered.

The 150th Division was composed of the 449th Regt, and two other regiments besides the three battalions under the regiment, there were the medical company, 82mm mortar company, and a signal company. PW 2nd Bn consisted of three rifle companies, and a heavy weapons company. PW 6th Co fought on 5-6 Feb, and was almost completely annihilated except for eight men, including the PW. Originally the company strength was 100.

Prior to 061400 Feb 51 when it was just about annihilated the 2nd Bn CP and its unit were situated on Hill 245. The 6th Co CP was located approx 200 m N of Hill 245 along the foot of the hill.

1,000 rd of small arms ammunition to each company, a pair of shoes to all men of the battalion, 50 pounds of fresh port to each company, 4 dynamite explosives to each company, the charge shaped as follows:

The explosive charge was laid in front of the oncoming tank, usually beneath the tracks, from a place of hiding. A pin resembling the grenade pin is pulled causing the dynamite to explode. The blast is capable of disabling a tank. PW said he brought the dynamite explosive with him when he surrendered.

Food consumed by the troops was obtained in exchange for food coupons at villages. Troops of the 6th Co were issued cotton padded overcoats 29 Nov 50 at CHOL-SAN vicinity PAENNA.

The mission of the 6th Co was to defend Hill 245 and a road passing near the foot of the hill.

Troops of his company were in good physical condition except a few who suffered from frost bite and malnutrition. 2nd Bn received inoculation of some kind one month after it entered KOREA.

29 Nov 50, troops of 2nd Bn were told by the political officer at CHOL SAN that North Koreans had 200 planes that was to support them. But no air support was received to substantiate this. He stated the majority of the troops had a healthy respect for the UN Forces air strafing and bombings.

Saw troops pick up and read leaflets for the past 20 days. He did not know what results it had on the others because the leaflet were not discussed openly.
