O/a 20 Oct 50, 334th Regt of 112th Div, 38th Army entered KOREA by train. Unit arrived near 38th Parallel o/a 25 Dec 50 on roads and mountain trails. After 3 days rest 334th Regt crossed 38th Parallel o/a 1 Jun 51. After about 10 days of march 334th Regt crossed two big rivers. First river (N of HAN River) was about 300 m wide where they crossed over ice and the next river was about 150 m wide and was crossed on a wooden bridge. Wooden bridge, constructed of logs was about 2 feet wide, and believes that it was constructed recently. O/a 10 Jan 51 at night 334th Regt arrived at an unk village approx 1 km S of the last river (S of HAN River). On the same day 334th Regt proceeded S on a main road marching approx 20km. 1st Bn arrived at a mountain (believed to be MUGAP SAN CS5341) 110300 Jan 51. 334th Regimental CP, 2nd Bn and 3rd Bn were separated on main road near the mountain where 1st bn arrived. All troops of 1st Bn located SSE at the foot of the mountain. Troops dug a large air-raid shelter and stayed there until 29 Jan 51. During the above period troops stayed in the shelter at day and collected food at night from surrounding areas. 291900 Jan 51, 1st Bn was ordered to go up MUGAP-SAN and establish a position because a UN Bn was close to 1st Bn. 2nd Co situated S at the foot of mountain. Troops engaged in digging fox holes until 31 Jan 51. 1st Bn engaged with UN Force until 041700 Jan 51 when it was forced to w■■■■■er. During this engagement PW Co incurred about 40 casualties by small arms and arty fire and he was separated from his company and surrendered.

b. Organization and Strength (Present)
38th Army composed of 112th, 113th, 114th Div and arty unit. 112th Div exposed of 334th, 335th, 336th Regt and a Mt Gun Bn. 334th Regt composed of three Rifle Bn and a Mt Gun Co. 1st Bn was composed of 3 Rifle Co and a Heavy Weapons Co. Present strength of 1st Bn was approx 280 men and 2nd Bn strength, originally 150, was approx 70 men.

c. Deployment of PW Own Unit
2nd Co with the remainder of 1st Bn withdrew northward 041700 Jan 51. Often heard from Co CO that 2nd and 3rd Bn were situated in rear to support 1st Bn. Further heard that 334th Regt was always situated between 335th and 336th Regt.

d. Status of Arms, Ammo Supply and Equipment
Prior to PW capture arms and ammo of 2nd Co was as follows:
TypeNoAmmo
60mm Mortars3 (originally 3)None
LMG7 (originally 9)About 100 rd each
Jap 38 Rifles18 (originally 27)About 20 rd each
US SMG M-318 (originally 18)About 100 rd each
Pistols (type unk)5 (originally 5)
Hand grenades4 (originally 4) per man
Late Dec 50 at approx 16km N of 38th Parallel, 334th Regt was issued 100 rd of small arms ammo per rifleman and 400 rd per LMG.
25 Jan 51 at MUGAP-SAN 1st Bn received the following items:
1 can (meat) per 3 men
Liquor (500 g) per 4 men
One pr canvas shoes per man
Above items shipped from MANCHURIA. However did not know how and where transported.

e. Status of Food and Clothing
Foods consumed by troops were confiscated from villages. However food was very scarce after crossing HAN River.

f. Mission and Intention
1st Bn was to advance S from MUGAP-SAN but due to UN resistance were forced to withdraw.

g. Medical
Prior to capture about 20 men, out of the 70 remaining in 2nd Co, suffered from the following:
5 frostbite (unable to walk)
15 (showed symptoms of fever, cough, and diarrhea)
3 blind (from malnutrition)
PW received inoculation (type unk) about one month before entering KOREA.

h. Effort of UN Air
While advancing S, PW Co suffered 40 casualties as a result of air strafing and bombing.

i. Propaganda
Troops were always told by the Co CO that they would be killed immediately after capture by US or ROK Troops. However approx 180 men among remainder of 1st Bn, 334th Regt were former CNA. Most of the former CNA were educated and trained by the US Army. These troops trusted US Army not to kill them for they knew how the Americans treated them in CHINA.

j. Arty and Armor
26 Jan 51, at MUGAP-SAN Co CO told troops that tanks or arty pieces are not fit tactically for mountainous KOREA. Could not understand why CO would say this, because arty is one of the best weapons for mountain warfare. Also observed about 30 tanks at MUKDEN, MANCHURIA and thought to himself why CCF does not use above equipment. Heard that there were unk numbers of CCF planes in KUJANG-DONG. Heard that these planes were furnishing cover for the truck transportation group which arrived from MANCHURIA. All the troops longed for air support due to the heavy UN air attacks. Wounded soldier always complained about the lack of air support. Also they feared most air attack and arty bombardment.
