FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MIDI - 0260) 8 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW very cooperative during interrogation. Information obtained considered fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
337th Regt crossed YALU River o/a 20 Oct 50 from CHIAN, MANCHURIA on foot over a bridge arriving same day at MANPOJIN. Thereafter Regt passed through HICHON, KUNU-RI where engaged UN troops for the first time. Proceeded through SAMSO-RI, SUNCHON and arrived vicinity approx 16 km N of 38th parallel on 25 Dec 50. Passing through YONCHON, Regt, 020200 Jan 51, again engaged UN troops south of 38th parallel. After an hour’s battle proceeded through UIJONGBU around 3 Jan 51 and arrived vic N of SEOUL 4 Jan 51. Here unit spent approx 5 days. Around 10 Jan 51, Regt departed this area and arrived at SAMBONG-NI (CS533613) around 12 Jan 51. At SAMBONG-NI unit recuperated for approx 16 days.
23 Jan 51, 337th Regt departed SAMBONG-NI, by Bn. However, did not know route taken by the other two Bn. 1st Bn first to leave. Bn passed a village believed to be NINGNAE-NI (CS492534) and crossed HAN River on same day of departure. Crossing HAN River was made at CS484533. After Bn crossed river headed in a NW direction, along the bank of HAN River and passed a village believed to be PAEGAIMI-RI (CS472530) before arriving at KUANGJIWON-NI (CS454460) 290700 Jan 51.
302000 Jan 51, unit departed KUANGJIWON-NI and arrived vic of CS467336 around 310200 Jan 51. 032400 Feb 51, Bn moved to hill CS467336 and dug in by Co. Just at daybreak Bn was attacked by UN aircraft and arty. This attack lasted until 041200 Feb 51, during which time PW hid themselves in foxholes and later surrendered to the UN troops who captured the hill.

b. Organization and Strength (Present):
1st Bn composed of 3 Rifle Co and a Hvy Wpn Co, present strength of Bn was 250 men. Originally Bn had 600 men, but lost 350 men since crossing YALU River due to enemy aircraft bombardments and arty.
Present strength of 2nd Co was 70 men of the original 170 men. Present strength of other companies in his Bn was about the same as in their Co.

c. Deployment of PW Own Unit:
Prior to UN attack 4 Feb 51, 1st Bn CP was deployed at foot of hill CS467336 on the reverse slope. 1st Co CP was deployed at top of hill on east side. 2nd Co CP was also deployed at top of hill approx 400 m W of 1st Co CP. 3rd Co CP was deployed approx 200 m NW of 2nd Co CP.

d. Status of Arms, Ammunition, and Equipment:
2nd Co had 3 LMG (600 rd ea), 1 x 60mm mortar (30 shells), 12 rifles, and carbines (80 rd), 6 pistols, 2 dynamite charges, and 4 grenades to each man.
Hvy Wpns Co: 6 LMG (1,000 rd ea), and 2 Bazookas (2.36).
337th Regt did not receive any resupply of ammo nor weapons, but received two pairs of canvas shoes, once at SUNCHON and the other at SAMBONG-NI around the latter part of Dec 50 and 14 Jan 51 respectively.

e. Status of Food and Clothing:
No new issue of clothing was received since crossing YALU River. Food was foraged from the villages of the unit’s immediate area.

f. Mission and Intentions:
Did not know exact mission of 1st Bn but was told by Co CO that they were to defend the hill CS467336 at any cost. No other information was obtained as to where they were to reassemble if they were to withdraw.

g. Personalities:
SHUN (fnu) (陳), 28, CO 1st Bn.
FONG (fnu) (■), 36, CO 2nd Co.
SU Nen Shuen (石■■), 33, Ass’t CO 2nd Co.

h. Medical:
Majority of troops in 2nd Co were suffering from malnutrition and were having a hard time in keeping up with the unit’s travel. However, no contagious disease among troops.

i. Propaganda:
O/a 20 Jan 51, PW Co CO stated that replacements were to arrive at the 337th Regt in the near future. Whether these replacements were coming from Manchuria or the rear area was unknown.
Supposed to spend new year (6 Feb 51) at SAMBONG-NI, however, since UN Forces started their offensive their plan was shattered.

j. Other Units:
Around 19 Jan 51, PW Co CO mentioned the presence of 42nd and 50th CCF Armies and NKA units S of HAN River when PW Regt was still in SAMBONG-NI.
