FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MIDI - 0254) 6 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

DATE OF CAPTURE, PLACE: Captured at (CS414357) 041000 Feb 1951 by 8th Cav.

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW cooperative but had a poor memory, gave very vague answers, made contradictory remarks. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW volunteered into CNA Oct 49 at YINGKOUW (管口), MANCHURIA. Captured by CCF Nov 1949 and assigned to his present unit.
Oct 1950, 450th Regt entered KOREA at ANTUNG, MANCHURIA. Crossed the frozen HAN River 15 Jan 51, approx 1 km E of SEOUL. Moving over mountain trails the regt arrived approx 4 km SE of KUMNYANJANG-NI (CS4122), 19 Jan 51, where foxholes were dug. 29 Jan 51, contact was made at which time regt was forced to withdraw to new positions having sustained heavy casualties. They retreated approx 16 km to vic (CS4136), arriving there 30 Jan 51. 041000 Feb 1951, he and others saw many UN troops advancing towards their position. They hid in their foxholes and did not fire. 041000 Feb 51, he and 2 others descended the hill and surrendered.

b. Organization and Strength (Present):
The present strength of PW company is 50 men, originally it was 100 men. His plat has 28 men left. There were more men in his plat than the other plat of the 1st Co that suffered heavy casualties during their first combat at a location approx 4 km SE of KUMNYANGJANG-NI.

c. Deployment of PW Own Unit:
The 450th Regt Hq was located at (CS4136), 4km N of his Co area. The 1st Bn Hq and 1st Co CP were located on the north slope of hill 278 at (CS419364) along with the rest of the Bn of the Regt.

d. Status of Arms, Ammo, Supply and Equipment:
Following is an estimate of the arms & ammo of his Co, as of 4 Feb 1951.

No new supply of ammo or equipment was received by them since entering KOREA.
All food was confiscated from villages. PW stated that they usually ate 2 times daily, sometimes none at all, due to the limited supply of food.
A pair of shoes was issued to each man of the 1st Co at hill 278. No other clothing received by the men.

f. Physical Condition of Troops:
All men of his company are in good physical condition except for one who suffered from frost bite.

g. Propaganda and/or Surrender Leaflets:
PW was told by the company commander, he will be either shot or be treated like a slave by his captors if he surrendered.
On two occasions all men in company read surrender leaflets and one day prior to his surrender heard surrender appeals broadcast through a loud speaker system. Could not tell what effects these surrender appeals had on the men since he did not dare discuss the matter with them
