ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 3804　6 March 1951

FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI 1627)　1 March 1951

PW was very cooperative.

Information seems fairly reliable.

PW was forced to volunteer into the NKA 17 Sep 50 at the time of its occupation of his home area.

PW with 60 other volunteers from same Myon assigned to 2nd Regt of 4th Div.

Assigned to 2nd Sqd, 1st Plat, HMG Co, 1st Bn.

With 1st Bn, received one month of Infantry Training on CHONGBAN mountain in SARIWON.

After 4th Div disorganized along 38th parallel, PW with approx 1,000 troops from 2nd Regt, retreated northward, using mountain routes, and arrived at KANGGYE (BA9738) during Nov 50.

When 15th Div of III NK Corps reorganized at KANGGYE, PW with 30 others from 2nd Regt of 4th Div, were assigned to Sig Bn of 15th Div.

Original 2nd Regt with 970 troops was redesignated as 2nd Regt of 15th Div.

After receiving one month of Infantry Training with Bn in KANGGYE, 15th Div (1st, 2nd & 3rd Regt) advanced south.

O/a 22 Feb 51, after arriving at PYONGCHANG, Sig Co dispatched from 15th Div Hq to lay telephone wire between Div Hq and 1st Regt Hq.

1st Regt Hq located in a village at base of mountain approx 6 km E of 15th Div Hq in the city of PYONGCHANG.

1st Regt was already engaged in battle against Un Troops in mountain at this time.

After PW company accomplished its mission, 1st Regt was forced to retreat to the rear on second day of battle (24 Feb 51).

Left behind in the village because of illness and was captured by UN troops 251500 I Feb 51.

15th Div Hq located in PYONGCHANG as of 22 Feb 51.

1st Regt Hq last located in a village at base of the mountain approx 6 Km E of PYONGCHANG; however, it had retreated to rear 24 Feb 51.

3rd Regt located approx 4 Km N of 15th Div Hq as of 24 Feb 51.

2nd Regt located approx 4 Km S of Div Hq as of 22 Feb 51.

1st and 2nd Regt had been engaged against UN Troops from 21 to 24 Feb 51.

III NK Corps: 1st, 15th Div and one other Div.

15th Div (Code name: MYO HYANG SAN (妙香山)): 1st, 2nd & 3rd Regt, Sig Bn, Engr Bn, Recon Co, Med Bn.

Sig Bn (Code name: TORAJI (도라지)): 3 Sig Co (Telephone Co (有線中隊), Wireless Co (無線中隊), and Switch Board Co (■謨中隊).

Telephone Co: 5 Plat.

1st Plat: 3 Sqd

Each Sqd: 6 men

Food was procured locally, therefore, received a sufficient amount of food (3 times daily) until very recently when local sources became exhausted.

Since Dec 50, had not observed any troops being issued additional ammunition.

Field telephones were used between PW Bn Hq and Regt Hq.

2 wireless sets were used between the Div Hq and Regt Hq.

The above code names and numbers had not been changed up to 24 Feb 51.

Recent morale of 15th Div, dropped very low after division participated in first actual combat at PYONGCHANG for three days (24 Feb 51).

Believed that a great number of troops retreated to the rear without offering any resistance against UN Forces.

This was probably because 15th Div is mainly composed of untrained troops who had joined the unit in Dec 50.

10 Feb 51, PW observed about 100 ROK PW who had been captured by 12th Div of the V Corps at HOENGSONG area. Disposition of these PW unknown.

There were five men in the PW Sig Bn who were reported to be typhus cases.

Believed that these troops had acquired the disease from farmers and villagers in whose homes the troops usually slept.

There were also five cases of frozen feet reported in the PW Bn. A red liquid was the only treatment for these patients.

PW was captured while resting in a farmer’s home because of illness.

Had not seen any UN leaflets nor heard UN loudspeaker broadcasts.
