FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI 1624) 28 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and talked freely. Had a remarkable ability to remember place names in Korea. Information seems reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Personal and Unit History:
PW was conscripted into the CNA in Feb 1939 at WENNAN and assigned to 30th Army, 27th Div, 81st Regt, 2nd Bn.
At SHANHSI SHENG (山西省) after battling with CCF for approx 8 months, Army CG finally surrendered 30th Army to CCF 24 Mar 49. Two days later, 30th Army deactivated and its men and equipment assigned to various CCF units, PW and approx 1,200 others assigned to HUAPEI Independent 20th Army Group, 66th Army. During May 50, departed with 66th Army by rail to TIENCHIN (天津), arriving three days later. There, underwent a period of political and advanced infantry training with entire Army.
23 Nov 50, departed with 66th Army by rail to ANTUNG (安東), arriving there four days later. 66th Army detrained and during hours of darkness, crossed the YALU River, arriving at SINUIJU (XE 1839) 28 Nov 50.
The following day, departed on foot with 66th Army southeastward, arriving at KUSONG (XE 9033) o/a 12 Dec 50.
After a few days rest, proceeded southward, via mountain routes, and arrived at KUMHWA (CT 6039) o/a 18 Dec 50. After four days of resting, 66th Army again proceeded southward toward the 38th parallel.
1 Jan 51 66th Army engaged UN forces near the 38th parallel. After two days of battle and forcing UN forces to retreat, 66th Army returned to KUMHWA to regroup. At KUMHWA, no replacements were received but 66th Army did get a resupply of ammo.
20 Jan 51, departed with 66th Army to CH’UNCH’ON (CS 8993), arriving there o/a 26 Jan 51. After a two day rest, proceeded southward, passing through HONGCH’ON (DS 0572) o/a 30 Jan 51 and arrived at WONJU (DS 1834) o/a 18 Feb 51.
66th Army was to defend this area at all cost, 197th Div set up its position around K’URUMTO (DS 1334).
22 Feb 51 197th Division engaged UN forces and after suffering heavy casualties retreated northward.
During this retreat, deserted his unit and voluntarily surrendered himself at PATPOLLUN (DS 0928) 23 Feb 51.

b. Location and Activities of Unit:
197th Division was to defend the KURUMTO area at all costs, as of 20 Feb 51.

Ind 20th Army Group: 66th, 67th and 68th Armies.
66th Army: 196th, 197th and 198th Divisions Howitzer Bn and other units.
197th Division: 589th, 590th and 591st Regiments Howitzer Bn and other units.
591st Regiment (28th “PU” ( ): 3 Rifle Battalions, Mortar Co, Guard Co, Med Plat, Sig Plat.
2nd Battalion: 3 Rifle Co, HMG-Mortar Co.
HMG-Mortar Company: 2 HMG Platoons, Mortar Platoon.

e. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
Food was obtained only through confiscation. Ate a sufficient quantity of rice and picked vegetables twice each day.
Ammo supply was replenished at KUMHWA o/a 4 Jan 51. HMG-Mortar Company received approx 20 x 82 mm Mortar shells and approx 1,000 rounds of HMG ammo for each gun. Heard that this ammo supply was brought in from ANTUNG via trucks.

f. Signal:
Battalion and higher echelons used telephones but only runners were used below battalion level.

g. Morale:
Morale of the troops was low because of fatigue and because they had no confidence in a possible CCF victory.

h. Psychological Warfare:
PW voluntarily surrendered 23 Feb 51, because he was former CNA soldier and had no desire to fight.
Observed many leaflets that informed him of the good treatment and food that was waiting; this enticed him to subsequently surrender. For some time, he was, however, doubtful about surrendering because the political officer always reminded them that they would face atrocities instead.
