FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI 1623) 27 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW cooperative but information limited.
Information seems fairly reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Personal and Unit History:
PW was conscripted into the CCF during Jan 49 at ANTUNG (安東) and assigned to 42nd Army, 126th Div, 377th Regiment.
During Jun 49, 42nd Army arrived in the PEIKING (北京) area, where the unit was engaged in patrolling against armed bandit groups.
During Jul 49, 42nd Army arrived at HEILUNG CHIANG SHENG (黑龍江省), where they were engaged in additional training and farming.
During Jul 50, 42nd Army departed HEILUNG CHIANG SHENG and travelled by train to CHIAN (輯安).
42nd Army entered KOREA from CHIAN during late Jul 50, and after 20 days of marching, arrived at HWANGT’O RYONG (DA 4926). (IN: PW upon being requestioned about the entry date of 42nd Army into KOREA, insisted that it was Jul 50).
From HWANGT’O RYONG, 126th Div marched southward, arriving at YANGPYONG (CS 6549) o/a 3 Feb 51.
O/a 8 Feb 51, 377th Regiment engaged a UN Unit 12 Km east of YANGPYONG where it went to regroup and prepare defensive positions.
19 Feb 51, PW and a comrade were captured at CS 834532, as PW unit withdrew.

b. Location and Activities of Unit:
3 Rifle Battalions of 377th Regiment were in defensive positions, guarding the road in vicinity CS 8353. Defensive positions were located on the south side of a hill in vicinity CS 8353, with 3rd Battalion flanked by 1st Battalion to the east, and 2nd Battalion the west. 19 Feb 51, these positions were abandoned and the units withdrew northward as the UN Units approached the area.

42nd Army: 124th, 125th, 126th Divisions, Artillery Division.
126th Division: 376th, 377th, 378th Regiments, Hq Battalion.
377th Regiment: 3 Rifle Battalions.
3rd Battalion: 3 Rifle Companies, HMG Company.
HMG Company: 2 HMG Platoons, 1 x 82mm Platoon.
1st Platoon (HMG): 3 Squads.

e. Replacement:
Three members from PW company departed for MANCHURIA during Jan 51 to obtain replacements for the company. Heard that this was done throughout the entire Army.

f. Food, Ammo, and Other Supplies:
Food was “borrowed” from the farmers in the area. A procurement slip was given, and the farmers were to be reimbursed, if, and when, the food supply from CHINA became available.
No ammo supplied to 377th Regiment since entering KOREA.

g. Signal:
Runners were used for communication at units smaller than battalion. Battalions and Regiment used telephones.

h. Morale and Battle Effectiveness:
Morale of 377th Regiment troops was low because of fatigue from lack of sleep.

i. Medical:
Frostbite was prevalent among the troops of the 377th Regiment. Four men from the HMG Co, 3rd Battalion were sent to the rear for treatment.

j. Psychological Warfare:
PW was captured after a brief fire fight.
Saw a UN leaflet in vicinity CS 8353 18 Feb 51.
Leaflet promised fair treatment to PW. PW could not read, but a soldier in his squad who was able to read, explained it to him.
Decided to surrender if a UN force advanced, because he believed that there was no alternative.
