They returned to Bn supply 29 Jan 51. Rather than return to his company, he headed in the direction of the UN Forces to surrender, having read a surrender leaflet on the trip to SEOUL. HMG Co was located on crest of Hill 234, as of 23 Jan 51. Foxholes were observed being dug in the area at the time. The location of his company was unknown because he did not join his unit after returning from SEOUL.

d. Deployment of Other Units
23 Jan 51, PW heard from the supply officer that 50th Army Hq was located approximately 5km ESE of SEOUL. The place name sounded like KWANJAN-NI (CS331564).
The 448th Regt was on the right (west) of his Regt.
Heard from his supply officer that the 38th Army was west of the 50th Army.
Heard from his Co CO that 38th, 39th, 40th, 50th and 66th Armies are now in KOREA. Observed a special brigade, which was attached directly to the 4th Field Army. At TONGNIM-DONG (XE5413) 16 Nov 50 observed about 10 US medium tanks parked along a main road with the unit.

22 Jan 51, his Co received 20 rd of ammo per man and 2,000 rd of ammo for each heavy machine gun at KUMYANGJANG-NI. It is his contention that Regt also received a new supply of ammo because it was customary for all units to receive ammo resupply at the same time.
Outside of the 5 days food supply received at ANTUNG an additional 3 days ration which they carried for emergency was issued them at TONGNIM-DONG. These were not consumed until they arrived near KUMYANGJAN-NI because enough food was confiscated from villagers or farmers. He did not know how big the depot area was except that the dumps were located on either side of a road.
While enroute to the dump he observed 4 trucks, loaded with machine guns and ammo, cross HAN River and head southward in the vicinity of (CS3356) o/a 23 Jan 51.

h. Other Information of Tactical Value or of Special Interest
(1) Physical Condition of Troops
Approximately 40% of PW Co are suffering from malnutrition and approximately 1% from ordinary cold.
Unit received one vaccination and 2 injections, near P’YONGYANG.
(2) Morale
Morale was low among the men. This was primarily due to the constant strafing and artillery fire, lack of food and hardship faced by them while bivouacking in the bleak cold mountainous area. Surrender leaflets had much to do with the lowering of the men’s morale because only through it were they able to know who they were fighting against and that they were actually fighting for RUSSIA.
(3) Propaganda and/or Surrender Leaflet
While returning to his unit from SEOUL, he picked up a surrender leaflet and showed it to the others who showed resentment and disbelief towards it. He wanted to surrender because he heard the rumor that CNA was in KOREA, and he wanted to be with them.
(4) Transport
There were 6 horses in his company which were used to transport heavy machine guns and ammo.
