FIELD REPORT (3rd Div IPW NO. 038) 4 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: LIU, Chang Chung (劉昌群)

DUTIES: Guarding and receiving Army high Command

DATE AND PLACE OF CAPTURE: 0800 hr, 1 Feb 51, CS 382316
INTERROGATOR: HY & AHS

2. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
PW read propaganda leaflets 27 Jan 51 and surrendered alone 1 Feb 51, because contents of leaflet stated that if PW surrendered he would be given good treatment and good food.

3. ASSESSMENT:

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:

b. Unit Location with Coordinate:
CS 382316, 448th Regt, located to the right of 449th Regt.

c. 449th Regt ordered to hold present position. Advance orders not heard.

d. Weapons:
Battalions had the following:
6 x 60mm mortars
6 Bazookas. Heard from other soldiers that bazooka was made in US.
The following was observed at Regt.
4 x 82mm mortars.
4 x 92mm gun, horse drawn, split trail, similar to the 76mm. Heard that they are awaiting for the arrival of the 60th Army before advancing. It was also heard that this Army has not left MANCHURIA yet.

e. UN Prisoners:
O/a 17 Jan 51 at approx 2100 while PW was on his way to KUMYANGJANG-NI CS 4122 for provisions, observed 2 American PW in the front seat of a jeep going N 2km W of KUMYANGJANG-NI. American on right had a bandage on his left arm. 449th Regt CO (HO Erh San) and 1 CCF guard were riding in the rear seat. Reported to be on the way to 150th Div Hq. CP was at that time located in vicinity of CS 382316. Jeep markings were not observed. Heard that there were 3 American Jeeps at Div Hq.
Interrogator’s Comment on above statement:
3rd Div Recon Co had one ROK MIA and 1 wounded US MIA at KUMYANGJANG-NI on 17 Jan 1951. The PW undoubtedly confusing the ROK driver of the jeep for an American. 3rd Recon Co has recovered bodies of men KIA at KUMYANGJANG-NI 17 Jan 51 and has physically accounted for all personnel except for the 1 ROK and 1 US soldier. PW stated it was a moonlight night and he was only a short distance away.

Regiment employed 10 Koreans for interpreting.
