DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 261430 I Feb 51 at NAKCH’ON DONG (DR 8305)
INTERROGATOR: GWA

2. ASSESSMENT:
Uncooperative; during his career in the NKA, PW had spent 9 months at a Political OCS and had been thoroughly indoctrinated in communist ideology. Therefore, he did not answer questions readily when asked them by the interrogator. He feigned ignorance of details about his unit and gave the excuse that as organizer for the “Democratic Youth League” in his battalion, he did not have knowledge of the military aspects of the NKA. Information is somewhat limited and the reliability is only fair.

HYON, Ung Ch’ol (현응철), Sr Lt, CO, 1st Co, 1st Bn, 25th Regt, 10th Div.

e. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
Personnel of 25th Regt, 10th Div, subsisted by raiding Korean villages and confiscating food.
10th Div has received no ammo supplies for over six months but captured considerable equipment and ammunition from ROK police and UN troops.

f. Signal:
25th Regt, 10th Div has 1 wireless set and a number of field telephones.

g. Morale and Battle Effectiveness:
Approximately 70 of the 120 men in 1st Bn, 25th Regt are members of the “Korean Democratic Youth League” (Communist Youth League). Morale is high. However, non-members have hopelessly low morale because they are not interested in the cause for which the NKA is fighting.
Claimed not to know the battle effectiveness of his unit because he was “not concerned” with such things as Organizer for the “Democratic Youth League”.

h. US, ROK, Other PW:
Observed approx 20 captured ROK soldiers at YANGGU during Dec 50. These men were being integrated into 10th Div units as replacements.

i. Medical:
Noted no disease in 10th Div although its personnel have received no immunization or other countermeasures.
10th Div has very few cases of frostbite. No medicine is available for treatment of those few who are suffering from frostbite.

j. Psychological Warfare:
PW did not surrender voluntarily. Wounded in the left leg, abandoned by his unit, and captured by ROK troops.
Observed UN Leaflets dropped in ANDONG-GUN Jan 51. Leaflets promised good treatment and medical and to NKA personnel who surrender voluntarily.
Did not believe the leaflets. Considered them to be US propaganda. Still does not believe leaflets because he has been a PW for three days, during which time he has been fed very little, kept in unheated shelters, given only two blankets, and given almost no medical attention. He is therefore receiving poor treatment just as he expected to receive from UN forces.

For the AC of S, G-2:

HONG
