Cooperative and intelligent. Judgment of distance fair. Reliability - Good.
a. Unit Designation:
Arty Bn, 124th Div, 42nd Army
b. Unit Organization & Strength:
Bn original strength approx 644 (Arty personnel 564, Hq men 80).
Each battery approx 188. 4 guns to a battery. Bn consists of 3 batteries.
c. Training (Location):
Unit received training in SSULIFEI (奇袒碑), about 15 miles northwest of LOYANG (洛陽), from May 49 to Sep 49. Later unit received further training in SANHOPAO (三合堡), about 17 miles W of TUNGHUA (通化).
d. Combat Experience:
Unit was in combat for 3 days from 30 Oct 50 until PW was captured, 3 Nov 50, at HWANGCH’ORYONG (黃草嶺), KOREA.
e. Casualties (Number & Cause):
Only casualty was a signal man, who ran into a US outpost, while looking for own Arty position.
f. Counter-Battery Effect:
No damage by counter-battery fire.
g. Air Attack:
The most feared UN weapon is air attacks.
h. Air Attack Defense Measures:
CCF were well concealed in foxholes, and since unit is not equipped with AA pieces, no one is allowed to fire on aircraft unless by direct order.
i. Armament (Type):
The Bn is equipped with 12 model 41 mountain guns, 75mm Japanese make, and small arms.
j. Movement:
Each gun required 6 horses for movement.
k. Ammo:
Armor piercing; Fragmentation, bursting radius 150-170 ft (sic); Smoke, white or blue; and Incendiary.
l. Fuses: (Type & Characteristics)
Impact, hand fused.
Delay fuse fixed time factor. Delay factor not adjustable; delay 2 - 3 seconds.
m. Tactics Used Against UN Tanks:
PW was taught to fire his Arty piece directly against the tank operator’s slotted peep hole. Reason given is that, it’s the weakest spot and if the driver is put out of commission, maneuverability would be nil, and crew killed off in time.
Firing from the side, the spot aimed for is the front sprocket. Reason given, unarmored and if damaged, maneuverability nil.
Reason for not firing directly at the gun turret is that it’s too heavily armored and he has seen shells from his unit bounce off the armored turret and sides. (PW was referring to his unit’s 75mm field pieces).
