FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI 0195) 13 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: TE Shao Yui
AGE: 18

DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 1300 hr 12 Feb 51, vic of HOENGSONG

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared cooperative and spoke without hesitation, but because of an unreliable interpreter, the information is considered possibly true.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
12 Feb 51 when 2nd Bn, 351st Regt was pushed back by UN Force on a hill in vic of HOENGSONG, PW and one other soldier of the same unit were overrun by UN tanks as they hid in their hole and were captured.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
The 39th Army composed of 115th, 116th, and 117th Div left area approx 40 km N of SEOUL 5 Feb 51. After the first day of March, 115th and 116th Div were no longer observed. When 2nd Bn, 351st Regt arrived at hill in vic of HOENGSONG 0500 hr, 12 Feb 51, 1st and 3rd Bn were on hill immediately W and across the road from 2nd Bn. PW heard from Co CO that 349th and 350th Regt, 117th Div were to the rear in reserve. Weapons of 2nd Bn (estimated strength - 800): 3 HMG (US 30 Cal, 2000 rd each); 17 LMG (750 rd each); 3 Rocket launchers (US, total rd 9); 1 x82mm mortar (20 rd); 2x81 mm mortars (total - 30 rd); 43 SMG (150 rd each); 20 US carbines (300 rd each); 150 US M-1 rifles (50 rd each); and 2-3 handgrenades each. 1st Bn strength and weapons were about the same as that of 2nd Bn but 3rd Bn strength was estimated to be between 700 and 800 men and armed approx 1/3 less than the other two Bn. While on the march from area 40 km N of SEOUL to vic of HOENGSONG, PW heard from other troops of the same unit that 117th Div objective was to cut the UN MSR. Just prior to leaving CHIAN, it was heard from the Company CO that the 4th Field Army was composed of the 38th, 39th, 40th, and 41st Armies.
Food: Obtained from villages is sufficient.
Clothing: All in winter uniforms.
Medical: Only few cases of frostbite are known of and no contagious disease was observed nor heard of.
Morale: Low, because of hardships they have to endure, that is, stay in holes during the day and move at night.
