FIELD REPORT (521 LDI - 0458)　18 February 1951

20 Jul 50 - Conscripted at WONJU. Received 2 mo of mil tng with wooden guns and grenades.

Sep 50 - 2,000 conscripts arr CHECH'ON.

Oct 50 - 5,000 trp (½ unarmed conscripts) arr MANP’OJIN. Recent conscripts issued Russ rifles and 100 rd ea.

Nov 50 - PW and 800 conscripts assigned to 12th Div. Total strength of the Div approx 8,000 - MANP'OJIN.

Dec 50 - 12th Div arr TOKCH'ON, PW atchd to Recon Bn (100 men).

15 Dec 50 - 12th Div dep TOKCH'ON for KOKSAN, PW Bn followed 3 days later.

Jan 51 - 12th Div arr CHORWON, Recon Bn following.

20 Jan 51 - 12th Div arr HONGCH'ON, unit redesignated 6th Div. (6th Div redesignated 12th) Recon Bn (250 men) situated at CHONCHAL (12 km E of HONGCH'ON).

1 Feb 51 - 2nd Co, Recon Bn (80 men) dep CHONCHAL and arr 12 km N of WONJU.

14 Feb 51 - 2nd Co dep deployment area, PW feigned illness, left behind.

15 Feb 51 - PW captured.

V Corps: 33 PON (Peak)

V Corps Hq: KALMAEKOL (28 km E of HONGCH'ON)

Recon Bn: CHONCHAL (12 km E of HONGCH'ON)

Told by Bn CO to avoid contact with enemy troops and obs dispositions, men, vehicles, arms, and direction of movement and report by radio to him, who in turn would relay message to Corps Hq from whence info would be disseminated to Div by telephone and runners.

Usually, about 15-20 fast footed men were dispatched, accompanied by Co CO and Plat Ldr, to reconnoiter the enemy. Time of dep was always at night and their return was usually at 0200 and 0300 in the morning. The others were left in Co area to guard the area.

About 50% of Recon Bn personnel were trained Recon men. The Co stayed in one area for about 3 or 4 days and then moved.

50% of Recon Bn personnel were SK residents who were not sincere in their missions but were prodded by the officers at the point of guns.
