ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 3750 2 March 1951
FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI 1611) 27 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: SIN Tong Sun (신동순) (NKA)
RANK: Pvt
ORGANIZATION: III Corps, 15th Div, 1st Regt. 1st Bn, 2nd Co, 1st Plat

EDUCATION: Primary School (4 years)

DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 241000 I Feb 51 at an unknown place.

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW does not seem to be very alert and does not know anything above his platoon level.
Although limited, the information appears to be fairly reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Personal and Unit History:
PW was conscripted into the army o/a 20 Aug 50 at KANGNUNG (DS9178) where he remained for 20 days. During this period, issued a uniform and underwent basic training with a "Volunteer Corps".
"Volunteer Corps" (approx 100 x men) left KANGNUNG GUN on foot o/a 10 Sep 50 and arrived at HOENGSONG (DS 1049) o/a 19 Sep 50.
Here, assigned to the 38th Div, 3rd Regt, 2nd Bn, 3rd Co, 2nd Platoon with the rest of the "Volunteer Corps".
Received 20 days of infantry training with the 38th Division.
O/a 5 Oct 50, Division began marching northward, and o/a 20 Nov 50 they arrived at KANGGYE (BA 9837). Division remained there for 15 days, during which time received more infantry training and political indoctrination.
While at KANGGYE, received Russian rifles and 100 rounds of ammo per man along with winter clothing.
O/a 5 Dec 50, 38th Division began marching southward. During the latter part of Dec 50, 38th Division arrived at KANGWONDO, HWACHON (CT8618) in Dec 50. During a UN air attack, PW remained when everyone scattered, and deserted in hopes of reaching his home.
After 5 days of walking by himself in a SE direction, arrived at HONGCHON (DS 0372) where he was told that his home area was occupied by UN Forces. At HONGCHON caught by the NKA and placed into the 15th Division. 15th Division remained in the HONGCHON area until the time of PW capture.
24 Feb 51, 15th Division began to retreat northward; PW and two of his friends remained behind and surrendered.

b. Location and Activities of Units:
Mission of Division was to attack and capture TAEGU. Told to EM by platoon leader.

c. T/O & E and Strength:
15th Division: 1st, 2nd and 3rd Regiments and other unknown units.
1st Regiment: 3 Rifle Battalions.
1st Battalion: 3 Rifle Companies.
2nd Company: 3 Rifle Platoons.

e. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
Rice collected from the population by the supply sergeant.
Often, there was not enough food. Usually, troops ate twice daily.

f. Morale:
Morale in 15th Division was low because the majority of troops were from South KOREA, and did not want to fight.
Another factor that contributed to low morale was the lack of food and supplies.

g. Medical:
PW had not noted any disease in his company.
No immunization of any kind were given to the troops.
Two men in the 2nd Company suffered from frostbite but received no treatment.

h. Psychological Warfare:
Deserted and surrendered voluntarily because, after seeing UN leaflets, he decided to quit fighting.
Saw UN leaflets at YANGGU in the latter part of Dec 50.
Remembers that the leaflets said: "If you surrender, we will send you back to your homes and will give medicine for your illnesses!"
After reading the leaflet, he made up his mind to surrender.
Did not hear any other soldiers discussing the leaflets.
