FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI 1606) 27 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: LEE, Jen Kui (李仁貴)(CCF)

DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 141200 I Feb 51 at an unknown location by an unknown ROKA Unit.

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and talked freely.
Information seems reliable but was limited because PW spent most of his time as a cook.
PW was suffering from a fragment wound of his left chest.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW was conscripted 12 Sep 49 into CCF 5th Co, 2nd Bn, 350th Regt, 120th Div, 40th Army at DAIREN (大連). Without receiving any Infantry Training, assigned duties as a cook for the company.
After remaining DAIREN for two weeks, with a group of 2,000 troops, wearing civilian clothes, departed by boat and arrived MANPOJIN (BA7259) over the YALU River. (All 1,000 troops were transported in one large boat.)
The group marched from MANPOJIN and arrived LIUHO (柳河) in Oct 49.
Upon arriving at LIUHO, issued an army uniform, 4 grenades, 1 x 38 model (Jap) rifle, and sixty rounds of ammo.
Oct 49, 120th Div departed LIUHO and arrived TUNGFENG (東豊).
At TUNGFENG, the troops underwent infantry training for approx 4 months.
The 120th Div was engaged in battle against CNA in IHSIEN, travelled to ANTUNG and remained there approx 6 months for recuperation and rest.
Nov 50, crossed YALU River and entered KOREA via SINUIJU (XE1839).
While travelling with the 120th Division in KOREA, PW remembered the following place names: UNSAN (YE3933); P'YONGYANG (YD3820); and approx 24 Km outside SEOUL (CS2060).
The 120th Div arrived at a mountain after travelling approx 7 days southward for SEOUL.
The 5th Co position, immediately upon arriving at the mountain, was attacked by UN troops.
During the battle, PW was wounded by fragment through his left chest and was captured by ROK troops 14 Feb 51.

b. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES:
Prior to departing the area approx 24 Km outside SEOUL Jan 51, PW 5th Co commander told his troops that the mission of the 120th Div was to stop the UN offense south of SEOUL.

Unknown Field Army: 40th, 38th, 39th, 50th, 42nd, 60th Armies, and other armies.
40th Army: 118th, 119th & 120th Rifle Divisions, 1 Mountain Gun Bn.
120th Div: 358th, 359th & 360th Rifle Regiments.
359th Regt: 3 Rifle Bn.
2nd Bn: 3 Rifle Co, Hvy Weapons Co.
5th Co: 4 Rifle Plat.
2nd Plat: 3 Rifle Sqd.

d. Personalities:

e. Replacements:
Jan 51, 24 Km outside SEOUL. PW's 5th Co received approx 80 replacements who had recently come to KOREA from MANCHURIA.
These replacements had been conscripted in MANCHURIA and seemed to have been untrained troops.

f. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
Food was generally sufficient because PW ate three meals daily. (Source and route of supplies were unknown.)
Jan 51, received an additional 60 rd of s/a ammo when company left 24 Km outside SEOUL.
The original issue of 100 rd had been expended in 5th Co first battle which occurred along the CHONGCHON River Dec 50.

g. Signal:
Runners were used for communication between PW Bn and Regt Hq.
Bugles were used for assembling and moving troops in non-combat areas.
Whistles were used for retreat, attack, and other movements in combat areas.

h. Morale & Battle Effectiveness:
The morale was generally high among officers but low among the troops because of the lack of combat training, weapons and ammunition.

i. Medical:
No cases of disease were noted in the PW unit.
PW was immunized once when the 5th Co was located 24 Km outside SEOUL Jan 51. Type of immunization given was not known.
Approx 8 men in his company were suffering from frozen feet and frostbite.
"HAITIENCHIU" (a red-colored liquid) was the only medicine used for treatment.

j. Psychological Warfare:
PW was captured after being wounded.
He had not seen UN leaflets.
