FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI - 1598)　24 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: KIM, Chong Hae (金宗海) (김종해) (NKA)

2. ASSESSMENT:
Dressed in civilian clothes, and claimed that NK uniforms were unavailable.
Worked with the G-2 section, ROK Headquarters at KAESONG (BT8515) until 10 Dec 50. Not inform the NKA that he formerly worked with ROK G-2.
Evasive and refused to disclose the type of work the Recon Bureau.
Information unreliable.
Recommended for further interrogation by the CIC.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Employed by the ROK G-2 section as a civilian agent to uncover subversive activities.
When retreated from KAESONG in Dec 50, left behind because of the shortage of transportation.
When the NKA entered the area, he was recruited by the NKA.
Conscripted into the NKA 12 Dec 50 at KAESONG (BT8515). Following day PW and 7 other conscripts were put to work on a farm, harvesting rice.
22 Dec 50, assigned to the 32nd Recon Unit. Received no training with the unit.
29 Dec 50, departed with 40 men of the 32nd Recon Unit to SEOUL, arriving 15 Jan 51. Remained at SEOUL for four days. Proceeded to TUKSON (CS2855), and joined the rest of the 32nd Recon Unit. Because of constant UN air attacks, 32nd Recon Unit departed this area 24 Jan 51 arriving at SOSA (CS0550) the following day.
2 Feb 51, ordered to reconnoiter the SUWON (CS2527) Area with the three former ROK soldiers in civilian clothes. The three departed first at night, on bicycles, and then PW departed a few hours later. They met at PONORI (CS1228) 3 Feb 51, Here, the three went forward to reconnoiter SUWON and were to meet the PW at PONORI at 031200 I Feb 51.
Waited until 1230 hours at the point of rendezvous, but the three failed to arrive. Returned alone to his unit in SOSA.
Underwent 3 days of interrogation by the Political Officer because of returning alone. After convincing the Political Officer that they were either captured or killed, he was set free.
7 Feb 51, retreated with 32nd Recon Unit to SEOUL, arriving on the following day.
111700 I Feb 51, PW and 16 others received orders to patrol the KWANAKSAN (CS2045) Area; 4 of them, including the PW, wore plain clothes. (No uniforms available) and the others wore NKA uniforms.
On the way to this mountain, the patrol dispersed in 2 directions，the 4 civilian clothed troops were to patrol the “White” UN Unit section, while the others were to patrol the “Colored” UN Unit section.
121700 I Feb 51, civilian clothed troops captured while sleeping in a deserted farm house in the KWANAKSAN Area.

b. Location and Activities of Unit:
Observed 47th Div Hq located in SEOUL, dug in around the base of a mountain (approx CS2457).

25 men of the 32n Recon Unit had been either captured or killed when they were sent out on patrols.

d. Personalities:
CHONG, Yong Dae (鄭永泰) (정영태), Maj, Chief. Recon Section, 32nd Recon Unit, 47th Div.

e. Replacements:
3 Feb 51, 32nd Recon Unit received 20 replacements from NKA Corps. These troops were armed with M1891/30 rifles. Believes that these were trained infantrymen.

f. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
Each man of the 32nd Recon Unit received 2 to 3 days ration (approx 750 grams of rice and wheat), 3 times weekly from its supply platoon.
No new issue of ammo was received since PW joined the unit in Dec 50.

g. Artillery:
11 Feb 51, observed large artillery piece emplaced along the northern bank of the HAN River, approx 100 m NE of a steel bridge (at approx CS2454). Could not identify the type of gun because only its muzzle protruded out of the emplacement. The emplacement was enclosed by a barb-wire fence and observed 6 NKA soldiers camouflaging the emplacement.
Observed many foxholes dug along the bank.

h. Signal:
Utilized telephones in 32nd Recon unit, out due to its unreliability (hard hearing and frequent wire disruptions), runners were chiefly employed.

i. US, ROKA, and Other UN PW:
Observed 5 British PW at SOSA(CS0550) 27 Jan 51. These five underwent interrogation which PW heard only included their name, rank and organization. Believes five British were not mistreated. Sent to SEOUL 28 Jan 51.

j. Psychological Warfare:
Captured:
Saw leaflets 12 Feb 51 at TUKSOM (CS2855).
Written in Chinese; PW was unable to read it.
