2. ASSESSMENT:
Fairly intelligent, cooperative. Reliability, good.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
11 Sep 50: Conscripted into the NKA, and assigned to 8th Div, 1st Regt, 3rd Bn, Signal Plat as Sqd Ldr at WONSAN (元山). Received 13 days of combat training.
23 Sep 50: Entire Div retreated to CH’OSAN (楚山) on foot. Received combat and Sig training for one month.
27 Nov 50 (sic): 1st Regt advanced south to PYONGYANG.
7 Dec 50: Advanced to HAEJU (海州) when the 1st Regt engaged ROK National Police.
3 Jan 51: Departed HAEJU and arrived in YONAN (延安); engaged the ROK National Police on an island (YONGMI 龍尾島) 16 km west of YONAN.
23 Jan 51: 1st Regt departed for SEOUL in battalion formation.
30 Jan 51: Arrived in SEOUL, stayed for 4 days.
3 Feb 51: 8th Div departed SEOUL for ANYANG (安養); engaged US troops. Retreated toward SEOUL to re-equip, and wait for a mechanized unit.
10 Feb 51: Due to the arrival of tanks, land mines and reinforcements, 8th Div, with 17th and 47th Div advanced south once again. Objective: Capture SUWON.
14 Feb 51: 1st Regt spearheaded the advance, and met the UN Forces at KWANGJU (光州), was completely enveloped, and all were captured.

c. Unit History:
8th Div was about the first unit to engage in actual combat (sic); Guarded the 38th parallel at INJE (麟蹄). 8th Div went as far down as the NAKTONG River, where they were routed and retreated north. At WONSAN, 8th Div regrouped and reorganized.

f. Disposition:
When last observed (10 Feb 51), 8th Div was in the vicinity of SEOUL west gate, 1st Regt, as the spearheading troops, moved far ahead of other regt.

g. Intentions:
8th Div was to attack SUWON in the early part of Feb 51.

h. Morale:
Low, because of lack of food and lack of arty and air support.

i. Supply:
Each man carried 5 days ration and 300 rounds of small arms ammo.

j. Other Units:
47th Div was situated on the right flank of 8th Div. 17th Div was in the rear of 8th Div.

k. Weapons Feared Most:
Tank firing
Napalm bomb
Bombardment
Strafing

l. UN PW:
PW saw about 30 US PW near the southern banks of the HAN River (7 Feb 51), marching south well guarded by 3 NK soldiers with SMG.
Hearsay: The 30 US PW had about a month of Communist indoctrination, and were sent back to their units to spread propaganda. None of them were believed to be wounded.

m. Psychological Warfare:
PW saw UN leaflets at ANYANG 3 Feb 51, which stated in Korean - that all those who surrender now will be humanly treated; the wounded and sick would be cared for, and all would be well fed and clothed. However, PW and many like him, doubted the propaganda leaflets, chiefly because the propaganda from their side was just the opposite.
