FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS SPECIAL REPORT - 029) 22 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Intelligence, good. Memory and cooperation, fair. Physical condition, fair. Reliability, fair.

3. MARCHES:
a. PW marched with div hq unit. The hq service unit marched in the middle of the div columns. Two regt marched in advance approx 3 miles ahead of div hq. The other regt followed in the rear. The div guard co marched approx 150 m ahead of the hq. Following the hq service unit was the div artillery bn. PW unit marched by night for security against air attack.
b. Marches usually started at 1630 hr.
c. Followed both trails and main roads.
d. PW unit moved in single file when marching over trails. On main roads, moved in column of two or three files.
e. Unit halted for 10 - 15 minute breaks at 4 - 6 mile intervals.

4. BIVOUACS:
a. Every man dug his own foxhole and used it for protection against air attack. In div service unit each plat usually posted one sentry approx 50 m from its area. Div guard co posted four sentries around div hq for security.
b. Sentries were posted approx 50 m from bivouac areas not more than 120 m apart. One sentry at each point for tours of at least one hour.
c. Individual soldiers sleep in own foxholes and ate with their sq. PW unit ate twice a day. One meal at 0800 hours and the other at 1500 hours.
d. When raining, PW used poncho for shelter.
e. Natural camouflage measures were taken in bivouac areas, making use of cover afforded by terrain.

5. ASSAULT:
a. Before the regiment set out for an assault, the regimental commander assigned one co as a probing force.
b. The depth of company’s assault was not more than 2 miles. Regt usually halted approx 3 miles from objective and then assigned a co to assault a specific objective.
c. If assault co reached its objective, it withdrew and reported to the bn hq immediately for additional troops. (sic)

6. PROBING ATTACK:
a. Normally used one sqd for probing attack.
b. Probing sqd was sent out from scout co, approx 100 m ahead of the co. After completing mission probing sqd withdrew to company.
c. When the sqd was sent out for probing attacks, the sqd ldr sent three men in advance to probe the enemy. One man assigned as machine gunner to cover the other two men going forward. When the two men of the patrol contacted the enemy, the machine gunner covered their withdrawal. The sqd covered the machine gunner’s withdrawal.

7. PATROLLING:
a. Each regt sent a daylight patrol, composed of six men and a patrol ldr, to scout enemy positions.
b. Night patrols normally formed by one plat. Their mission was to assault enemy positions.
c. All members of patrol group are armed with SMG (US), 150 rd, and 5 hand grenades.

8. ANTI-TANK TACTICS:
a. PW heard the infantry used Bazookas and dynamite filled tube against tanks. Each bn had three Bazookas.
b. PW Co had tank-killer teams, composed of 2 men and team ldr. Each man and team ldr had one dynamite tube, dynamite sack and 4 hand grenades. Team ldr had a SMG to cover other two men.

9. AMBUSH AND ENCIRCLING TACTICS:
a. On one occasion, PW Co used two plat in an ambush, on both sides of a hill, and encircled a UN patrol on the road.
b. Anti-tank wpn are used in ambush.
c. Encircling units are instructed not to open fire until enemy passes through ambush and then strike from the rear and open fire from both sides of the road.

10. SUPPLY:
a. All personnel carry 3 catties (1.3 lb per catty) of Chinese hardtack. When consumed, returned to div supply section for rations. There were enough rations for PW Co.
b. There was sufficient ammo in PW Co. They were resupplied from div supply unit. Supplies were transported on trucks, horses and mules.
c. PW had cotton padded uniform. It was adequate.
d. Civilian clothing was not used in PW unit.

11. COMMUNICATIONS:
a. PW saw four radios in div communication co.
b. PW Co used runners to carry both written and verbal messages within distances up to a mile.

12. TRAINING:
a. PW received three months basic training.
b. Normal training period is approx three months.
c. During training period, received only political training. Heard combat units received actual firing training.

13. MEDICAL:
a. There were only two frostbite cases in PW Co at time of capture (23 Nov). They were sent to div hospital for treatment.

14. DISCIPLINE:
Violators of regulations were punished with several days’ hard labor or confinement.
Not many desertions in PW Co.

15. RELATIONS WITH KOREANS:
Korean civilians disliked CCF.
PW Co had four Korean interpreters and used Korean civilians as road guides.
