FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI 1583) 22 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and spoke freely. Information seems fairly reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
20 Jul 50, conscripted into the Volunteer Unit at YOJU and received 2 months training.
During Sep 50 PW and 2,000 others were sent to WONJU (DS0734) where they were assigned to the 12th Div.
23 Sep 50, arrived at CHECH’ON (DS3010).
23 Sep 50, departed CHECH’ON and travelled through WONJU, HOENGSONG (DS1049), HONGCH’ON (DS0271), SINKO-SAN (新高山), TOKCH’ON (BV6904), HUICH’ON (BV6749) and arrived MANPOJIN (BA7259) 3 Nov 50.
AT MANPOJIN, regrouped and arrived YANGDOK (DV9985) where PW was assigned to the V Corps, Recon Bn 25 Dec 50.
From YANGDOK travelled to KOKSAN with V Corps, Recon Bn.
30 Dec 50, the Recon Bn, departed KOKSAN and marched to KAREGOL (CS6571) 10 Jan 51. At KAREGOL the Bn was reorganized from 2 companies to 3 companies.
30 Jan 51, the 2nd Co, Recon Bn departed KAREGOL and marched to 8 Km N of WONJU, arriving 1 Feb 51. After being detected by a ROK Force, the 2nd Co fled, trying to avoid contact with the ROK unit and arrived at a hill 6 Km SW of WONJU 10 Feb 51.
15 Feb 51, PW was captured as he was left behind by his unit because he was unable to continue with them.

b. Location and Activities of Unit:
2nd Co was sent to the WONJU area 1 Feb 51 to learn of UN vehicular and troop movements in the WONJU area and to determine the location of NKA Units in the WONJU area.
4 Feb 51, troops of the 6th and the 7th NK Divisions were located on a hill 12 km North of WONJU.
3 Feb 51, troops of 9th and 10th Divisions were said to be located 8 km North of WONJU.
30 Jan 51 the V Corps Hq was located at KALMAEGOL (phonetic) (28 km East of HONGCHON).

d. Food, Ammo, & Other Supplies:
Food was procured locally from abandoned houses.

e. Signal:
Wireless telephones were utilized by Recon units when the unit went out on a mission.
The Recon Bn and V Corps Hq communicated with a wire telephone.

f. Morale and Battle Effectiveness:
Morale of the Recon Bn troops was fairly high.
Troops believed that final victory can be won by the NK with the aid of the CCF.

g. UN PW:
PW observed 11 ROK PW guarded by Security troops of the V Corps 12 Km E of HONGCHON 30 Jan 51.

h. Medical:
Six troops of the Recon Bn were suffering from an unknown malady (symptom: chills, headache). This sickness was said to be contagious. The six men were sent to a hospital 21 Jan 51.
No cases of frozen feet were seen.

i. Psychological Warfare:
PW was captured.
He saw leaflets 8 Km N of WONJU 3 Feb 51. The leaflet urged NKA troops to surrender. Fair treatment was promised (even beef with meals).
It was disconcerting for the PW with his mixed emotions.
