2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and gave information freely. Although lacking education was alert and possessed a good memory.
Information seems reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology
Conscripted 15 Oct 49 at HAMHUNG with approx 1,500 others. Conscript constituted the 17th Regt, 2nd Div. Formerly only the 4th and 6th Regiments composed the 2nd Division.
Received 6 months infantry training. Assigned to the Medical Section, 2nd Bn, and received 6 months medical training.
2nd Division departed HAMHUNG 25 Jun 50 and arrived KUMHWA 28 Jun 50.
Departed KUMHWA 29 Jun 50 and arrived CHUNCHON (CS8995) 1 Jul 50 and fought for 2 days before departing for KAPYONG (CS6988), arriving 4 Jul 50.
Div passed through CHONPYONG (CS6278), CHINCHON (CR6179), CHONGJU (CR6555), KUMCHON (DQ2197), and arrived in the NAKTONG River area.
Remained in 2nd Division Field Hospital at CHONGJU for approx 20 days. PW was on his way to the 2nd Bn when the UN Force began its offensive. Met his battalion and retreated northward together with the 17th Regt, passing through the SOBAEK, TAEBAK and ODAE mountains, and arrived YANGYANG (DT6613) Oct 50.
Traveled through the Mountains toward the east and arrived in the HAMHUNG area.
17th Regt arrived in the KANGGYE area 20 Dec 50. 4th and 6th Regiments were already there when the 17th Regt arrived.
2nd Division was issued winter clothing during Dec 50.
Remained in the KANGGYE Area 10 days before departing southward with approx 1,500 men.
2nd Div arrived HONGCHON 3 Jan 51 where it fought for 2 days before arriving approx 20 Km S of the 38th Parallel.
Proceeded southward and arrived ANHUNG (DS4359) 12 Feb 51 after having been engaged in a 2 day battle, approx 20 Km N of ANHUNG.
Arrived CHODONG 14 Feb 51, and was attacked by UN units resulting in disorganization.
PW surrendered the following day.

b. Location and Activities of Unit:
2nd Bn, 17th Regiment was disorganized when last seen 14 Feb 51.

c. T/O & E of Unit:
II Corps: 2nd, 10th and the 31st Div.
2nd Div: 4th, 6th and the 17th Regt, Med Bn, Sig Bn, Arty Bn, Engr Bn and Transportation Bn.
17th Regt: 3 Inf Bn, Med Co, Sig Co, 45mm Gun Co, 120mm Gun Co and SMG Co.
Each Inf Bn: 3 Inf Co, HMG Co, 82mm Mortar Co, Sig Plat and Med Plat.
Each Inf Co: 3 platoons
Each Inf Plat: 3 squads and HMG squad.
Each Inf Sqd: 5 to 6 men.

  17th Regiment has suffered approx 150 casualties up to 14 Feb 51. Present strength was estimated to be 800.

e. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
Food was either procured locally or received from the regiments in sufficient amounts. Three meals were received daily. Three days supply of rice was carried by each man and was replenished from villages.
Fresh ammo received by the 17th Regiment after fighting two days, approx 20 Km N of ANHUNG 10 Jan 51. 2 or 3 grenades 100 to 150 rd per man were intact when they proceeded southward. Since limited amounts of rifle ammo used, only 4 boxes of SMG ammo and 4 boxes of grenades were received from Corps supply. Ammo was carried by men.

f. Morale:
Morale was low due to constant long marches.
Secondly, they have no artillery or air support. Although winning some battles, the troops do not have too much confidence.
The troops were adequately clothed and fed, so no complaints were heard in regard to these factors.

g. UN PW:
Approx 30 Km N of PYONGCHANG 14 US PW were seen being marched northward by some NKA troops. It was heard that they were being taken to Corps Hq.
Approx 88 ROK PW were captured by the 3rd Bn, 17th Regt in the general area of ANHUNG.
All were being taken to the II Corps Hq. Observed o/a 10 Feb 51.
Before departing KANGGYE in Dec 50, orders were received from KIM, Il Sung not to mistreat or kill PW.

h. Signal:
All the battalions and regiments had telephones (Russ and US).
Some of the companies had telephones.
Communications between regiments by radios.

i. Medical:
Special EEI - Medical EM
Duties, training of medical personnel.
PW dressed and treated wounds. Approx 90 EM of the 17th Regt received 6 months of first aid and corpsman duties while at HAMHUNG. Training was conducted by the training company of the 2nd Div.
No surgical equipment were in the Div.
PW heard that there was a Corps Field Hospital in N KOREA.

j. Psychological Warfare:
PW surrendered. He disliked the constant long marches and the general duties of the Army.
He saw leaflets at ANHUNG 8 Feb 51.
It read: “You NK soldiers do not have any planes, and you are only suffering. Surrender and good treatment will be offered.”
Believed its contents and surrendered.
The troops were heard discussing the veracity of the leaflet.
