1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and talked freely. Information seems reliable. Not familiar with line unit duties.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Conscripted May 48 at HAMHUNG (CV 7518) with approx 50 others.
Assigned to 1st Division, 4th Regt at HOERYONG (BT7275).
Received 2 months of basic training.
1st Division moved to HAMHUNG Jul 48.
From Aug 49 served as an ass't platoon commander with rank of master sergeant.
Appointed to attend the #1 Military Academy during Oct 49 with approx 80 others from the 4th Regiment. Graduated from the academy Aug 50 with rank of Jr Lt. Promoted to Lt Aug 50. Assigned to personnel section as an ass't section chief in the Independent 567th Regiment at SARIWON (YC4065).
Regiment departed SARIWON for SEOUL Aug 50 and marched to UIJONGBU (CS 2878) when they turned around and retreated northward because of the UN offensive. Marched over the main highway and arrived at CHOSAN (YE 3724) during Oct 50.
Remnants of the 8th Division were in CHOSAN when PW joined them.
During early Nov 50, the 567th Regiment was deactivated and its personnel were distributed within the 8th Division.
PW was assigned to the 1st Regiment, personnel section as ass't section chief.
Division was equipped with used arms and winter clothing. Clothing believed to be from CHINA.
8th Division departed CHOLSAN during Nov 50, and arrived HAEJU (YC 3713) after a one week march.
1st Regiment remained at HAEJU while the rest of the division proceeded southward toward SEOUL.
Promoted to Captain Jan 51 and assumed duties as the 3rd Battalion Adjutant.
1st Regiment departed HAEJU during Jan 51 and arrived SEOUL 28 Jan 51.
2nd and 3rd Regiments were in SEOUL when the 1st Regiment arrived.
The 1st Regiment received orders to proceed to SUWON 9 Feb 51. Departed SEOUL 12 Sep 50, south of SEOUL the Regiment was attacked and shelled by UN units, resulting in disorganization.
PW, 2 officers, and 30 EM surrendered.

b. Location and Activities of Units:
The 1st Regiment received orders, while in SEOUL on 9 Feb 51, to proceed to SUWON. The 3rd Battalion commander was heard to say that upon reaching SUWON, the regiment would receive further orders. They were ordered to leave their heavy weapons, as they would be travelling through mountains.
The regiment (378 EM and officers) departed SEOUL 12 Feb 51 and crossed the HAN River at TUKSOM (CS 2855) over the ice at 2200 hrs. Arrived at a point, 25 km south of RUKSOM before being attacked by UN forces, which resulted in disorganization.
Heard that the 1st Battalion engaged some UN forces approx 19 km south of SEOUL.
Heard that the 2nd and the 3rd Regiments were to follow the 1st Regiment as soon as SUWON was reached.

c. T/O & E and Strength of Units:
I Corps: 8th Div and 2 other Div
8th Division: 1st, 2nd and the 3rd Infantry Regiments, Arty Regt, Engr Bn, Recon Co, Med Bn, Signal Bn, and Guard Platoon.
1st Regiment: 3 Rifle Bn, Signal Co, 45mm Gun Co, 76mm Gun Co, 120mm Gun Co, Engineer Co, Recon Platoon.
Each Rifle Bn: 3 Rifle Co, 1 HMG Co, 1 82mm Mortar Co, 1 Signal Plat, 1 45mm Gun Plat, 1 Med Plat, 1 Supply Plat and 1 AT Plat.
Each Rifle Co: 3 Rifle Platoons and 1 HMG Platoon.
Each Rifle Plat: 3 Rifle Squad
Each Rifle Sqd: 11 men

d. Personalities:
PAEK, Hak Lim(白學林)(백학림), Col, Regt CO, 1st Regt.
He was in the CCF Army until Aug 45, when he returned to KOREA and entered the NKA. He was said to have attended an army school in MOSCOW. He returned from RUSSIA in Jul 50 and assumed command of the 567th Independent Regiment.
KIM, Sang Gun (金相根)(김상근), Maj, Bn CO, 3rd Bn.
He assumed command of the battalion Jan 51.
UI, Yang Gi (■楊基)(우양기), Lt Col, Adj, 1st Regt.

e. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
Food was received from the rear, believed to be shipped from North KOREA by truck. Two meals per day were received in insufficient amounts. The troops usually carried 5 days food with them.
1st Regiment was issued ammunition 10 Feb 51 before departing SEOUL. Approx 300 rounds of rifle ammo per man were issued.

f. Artillery:
While at HAEJU, heard that the 45mm Gun Company, the 76mm Gun Company, and the 120mm Gun Company, had left the regiment for the division, where they were supposed to receive their pieces.

g. Morale:
Morale, until SEOUL was reached, was fairly high. However, when the regiment departed SEOUL and infiltrated through the UN lines, confidence and spirit dropped among the troops. For most of them, it was the first combat, and, when attacked by the UN troops, they fled.

h. Signal:
The companies had telephones for communication with battalion. Phones were also used to contact Regimental Headquarters.

i. UN POW:
While in HAEJU and SEOUL, the 1st Regiment received orders from KIM Il Sung not to mistreat any UN POW. Punishment for violation of this order was trial by courts-martial.

j. Medical:
It was heard that, while in SEOUL, there were cases of communicable disease in the 2nd and 3rd Regiments. The entire 1st Regiment received immunization (unk) while in HAEJU Jan 51.

k. Psychological Warfare:
Surrendered with 2 officers and approx 30 EM. Was not on friendly terms with the battalion commander, which was one of the chief factors in his surrendering.
Saw leaflets written in Chinese Jan 51, and was not able to read them.
