10 Feb 5I, because wounded in the chest and too weak to move when the 7th Co was hit by UN Force and retreated, he was left behind and captured.

O/a 27 Jan 51, 197th Div left HWACH’ON with an estimated strength of 4,000. It was composed of the 592nd, 593rd, 594th Regt and an attached Arty Bn.

Weapons of 594th Regt including attached Arty Btry (estimated strength 900): 4x82mm mortars (8 rd ea), 2-3x60mm mortars per co (6 rd ea), 4 HMG per Bn (1,000 rd ea), 2 LMG per Co (800 rd ea).

With the exception of approx 50 cooks and laborers, all had Chinese 7.9mm rifles with approx 100 rd ea and approx 50 rifles with 100 rd ea. Each had 2 hand grenades.

Personnel and wpn of 592nd and 593rd Regt were about the same as that of 594th Regt.

Weapons of Arty Bn (estimated strength 300): 4 AT guns (size unk) (200 rd ea), 6 LMG (200 rd ea).

All had Chinese 7.9mm rifles with approx 100 rd ea and approx 10 M-1 rifles with 100 rd ea.

6 Feb 51, 197th Div arrived at hill 2 km E of HONGCHON where they set up a defense line with the 592nd Regt on the E slope of this hill; 593rd Regt on the top and 594th Regt on the W slope. The Arty Bn was placed at the extreme W of this hill and approx 500 meters forward of the main defense line.

1200 hr 9 Feb 51, 197th Div line was attacked by UN Force and 7th and 8th Co of 3rd Bn, 594th Regt were hit hard leaving approx 40 KIA and at 1600 hr 10 Feb 51 PW was captured. The others of 197 Div were last observed still holding their line as PW was brought down from hill.

Heard from the 7th Co CO that the mission of the 197th Div was to hold the line at hill approx 2 km E of HONGCHON until reinforcements arrived; then to attack.
