FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI 0153) 11 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and seemed to be intelligent. Questions were answered promptly and information seems to be reliable.
Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
8 Feb 51, 3rd Bn was attacked by a ROK Unit at BONGWHA Mt and being a medical aid man, PW was ordered to carry a wounded soldier to safety. After carrying the wounded for several hours, he lost contact with his unit and therefore, his himself in vic of BONGWHA Mt until he was captured.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
PW joined the 7th Div (also called the 851 Unit) o/a 21 Jan 51. Was formerly with the 38th Div, 1st Regt until it was deactivated o/a 6 Jan 51 in vic of HONGCHON. The 1st Regt of the 38th Div was then assigned to the 7th Div on f Feb 51 and PW heard that the 3rd Regt (38th Div) went to the 6th Div. Upon arrival to the 7th Div, was immediately, assigned to the 3rd Bn of the 1st Regt and the Bn moved to vic of BONGWHA Mt on Feb 51.
Elements of the 7th Div were the 1st Regt (also called the 720 Unit), 2nd and 3rd Regt. Also heard that a Signal Unit, Engr Unit and a Recon Co were attached to the Div. Estimates the strength of the 7th Div to be about 3,600.
o/a 3 Feb 51, 7th Div Hq departed from YONGDU-RI (approx 15 miles WNW of HOENGSONG) and went to a small village located approx 6 km E of ULTUNG (approx 28km E of YONGDU-RI). PW believes that the Div CP moved elsewhere.
1st Regt CP was located in a small village approx 3 km W of HONGHWA-SAN (DS24.4-47.2). Estimates the strength of the 1st Regt to be about 1200. Regt was comprised of 3 Infantry Bn and each Bn had a machine Gun Co and a mortar Co attached.
Weapons observed in the 3rd Bn of 1st Regt: 3 x 82mm mortars (81mm shells - 25 rd all total), 2 HMG (ammo unk), 9 LMG (ammo unk; very little), 4 PPSH SMG plat (200 rd per). Individual weapons were Russian rifles (70 rd per), Japanese M99 rifles (70 rd per) and Russian carbines (100 rd per).
3rd Bn CP was located at ULTUNG (approx 4 km E of BONGWHA Mt) and the only specific landmark was a small river which flowed through the center of the village.
1st Regt was defending and fighting a delaying action at BONGWHA Mt to give the rest of the 7th Div time to rest and prepare for the 4th phase of operation. Heard this from his Co CO. He also heard that their General Offensive would be supported by tanks, Arty and planes.

5. GENERAL INFORMATION:
a. Clothing: Practically everyone in the 7th Div wore cotton quilted winter uniforms and those with summer uniforms wore overcoats.

b. Diseases: PW stated that about 20 men from the 3rd Bn were suffering from influenza. Medical facilities were poor and although some patients were cured, they were so weak that they were stripped of their weapons and equipment.

c. Food: Unit received no food supply and food found in villages was insufficient.

d. Morale: Morale of the men was very low for they had no tank or Arty and no air support.
