ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 3642 27 February 1951
FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI 0137) 9 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Evasive, not prompt in answering questions, and seemed to be very cautious of his answers. Information received not too reliable.
Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
o/a 4 Feb 51 departed his unit to go to a hospital in CHUNCHON aided by 3 others. On the way, they heard a rifle shot and the aids immediately escaped, leaving PW behind. All alone, PW walked to a nearby village where he was captured.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
1 Feb 51, II Corps CP was at YUDONG-NI (DS2557). PW spent 4 days there. o/a 3 Feb 51, heard from his Defense Section Chief that II Corps CP was still at the same place.
9th Div CP, when last seen 3 Feb 51, was approx 12 km E of MAAM-NI (DS3054). Elements of the 9th Div were an Arty Regt, two infantry regt, (1st and 2nd) and Communication Bn. Estimated 9th Div strength to be about 3,000 men. Bn communicated with the 1st and 2nd Regt and the Arty Regt daily and he is positive that there are only 2 infantry regt in the Div and not three.
The Comm Bn strength was estimated to be about 100 men and they were all armed with PPSH SMG (1 magazine per). Six field phones were the only communication equipment in the Bn. Unit had no radio nor wireless sets.
Strength of the Arty Regt was estimated to be about 1,000 men and they were armed with PPSH SMG (2 magazines per) US rifles (80 rd per) and Russian rifles (50 rd per). (5) LMG Degtyarev DP (1 magazine per). Heard from the defense section chief that the Arty Regt did not have any Arty nor did they have any mortars. The Regt CP was in the same locality as the 9th Div CP (approx 12 km E of MAAM-NI (DS3054).
The 1st and 2nd Inf Regt CP were also in the same area as the Div CP. Strength of each Regt was estimated to be about 500 men. Weapons observed in both Regt were Russian rifles (60 rd per) and PPSH SMG (75-100 rd per).
9th Div, together with its elements were resting and were preparing for their 4th phase of operation.
o/a 1 Feb 51, heard from his Defense Section Chief that a CCF Div was setting up defense positions in vic of CHUNCHON.

5. GENERAL INFORMATION:
a. Clothing: No one in the 9th Div wore winter uniforms. Officers wore overcoats.

b. Diseases: o/a 4 Feb 51, heard from the chief nurse in the medical section that 200-300 men in the 9th Div contacted the small pox disease and were evacuated to the rear. No treatment given for precaution against this disease. Did not hear of any other contagious diseases.

c. Physical Condition: About 10% of the men in the 9th Div were suffering from frostbite. No treatment given.

d. Food: Unit received no food supply and food found in villages was insufficient. The men ate 2 meals a day and were always hungry.

e. Morale: About one-third of the men in the 9th Div were regular army men and their morale was very high. Morale of the remaining men was low because of lack of food and no winter clothing.
