FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI 0115) 7 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative, information probably reliable. Recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Assignment and Intention:
3 Feb 51 while confined in the house of MASHI-RI village due to influenza the 9th Div left for UNGYO-RI (vic of DS3743) where they were to meet the 27th Div from TUNGNAE MYON (vic of DS3255) and together proceed to CHONGSON located 35 km NE of YONGWOL. PW Bn CO ordered him to rest at MASHI-RI village and then proceed to the hospital located in YUDONG-NI (DS2559).
Heard from the Bn CO that the objective of the II Corps (27th Div, 2nd Div, 9th Div and 31st Div) was to go to CHONGSON area and engage in guerrilla warfare to cut the UN MSR. However, their main mission was: (1) to keep radio communication with front line Hq (believed to be in P’YONGYANG) at all times, (2) to stay under cover to avoid detection from the air and let the UN Forces move northward, (3) to wait for orders to attack the UN Forces from the rear when the CCF make their frontal attack.
Last observed the II Corps (27th, 2nd, 31st Div) 1 Feb 51 at TANGNAE-MYON area (vic of DS3255) when they were distributing rice stored at CHAPO-RI, TUNGNAE-MYON. At that time he observed elements of the 7th Div also moving rice out of this village. Heard from his Bn CO that the V Corps was also located in that area.
Heard from his Bn CO that while the 9th Div and the 27th Div were to proceed to CHONGSON area, the II Corps Hq with the 2nd Div and 31st Div was to move east and then south to CHONGSON area o/a the same time.

b. CCF:
Heard o/a 30 Jan 51 from officers of Arty Bn that CCF were located at HONGCHON and CHUNCHON.

c. Strength:
II Corps consists of 27th Div (approx 3-4000), 2nd Div (approx 3-4000), 9th Div (approx 3-3500), 31st Div (approx 3-4000).
9th Div consists of 1st Regt with approx strength 900-1200, 2nd Regt with approx strength 900-1200, 3rd Regt with approx strength 900-1200 and Arty Bn with approx strength 120 men. Original Bn strength was 300; however, due to illness, desertion and air raid casualties, the present strength was 120.

d. Weapons:
HMG 2 to each Bn (approx 5,000 rd of ammo), LMG 1 to each Co and mortars (size unk) 2 to each Bn. All troops were armed with either PPSH SMG (approx 100 rd of ammo each), M-1 Rifles (approx 250 rd of ammo each), carbines (approx 100 rd of ammo each), and Soviet rifles (approx 150 rd of ammo each).

f. Medical:
50 men from his Bn were stricken ill from unk disease. (symptoms of illness were high fever, nose bleeding, and vomiting.)

g. Food Supply:
Each man carried 5 days of ration with him (one day ration was 900 grm of rice).

h. Morale:
Morale of troops was low due to air attacks, insufficient food and cold weather.
