3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
22 Sep 50 - Conscripted into 38th Div in CHUNCH‘ON (春川) and received 6 days training. 200 men from 17 - 35 were conscripted.
6 Oct 50 - 28 Dec 50 - 38th Div retreated to IP’YONG (梨坪) via YANGGU (楊口), HAMHUNG (咸興) and KANGGYE (江界). They walked only at night through mountainous areas.
8 Jan 51 - 38th Div fully reorganized.
20 Jan 51 - 38th Div advanced to HONGCH‘ON (洪川).
31 Jan 51 - 38th Div advanced to P’YONGCHANG (平昌). 3rd Regt, 38th Div reassigned to 27th Div and redesignated 14th Regt, 27th Div.
4 Feb 51 - 27th Div advanced to PANGDOK-MYON (方德面).
6 Feb 51 - PW was captured at PANGDOK-MYON.

b. Unit Organization and Strength:
Strength:
At the time PW was assigned: (Hearsay)

60th Arty Bn - 36 (This was the approx strength and still called a Bn.)
Present strength unknown.

c. Unit History:
PW heard that 27th Div was originally organized in MANCHURIA.

d. Personalities:
PAK, Chong Hwa (朴■華)(박종화), Maj, CO, 1st Bn, 27th Div, 35. Height: 5’4” - Weight: 60kg - Stout - Complexion: Light - Scar on the throat - Married - Last Seen: PANGDOK-MYON (方德面) - 4 Feb 51 - Formerly a member of CCF.

e. Communications:
Battery and below - Runners
Battalion - Field phones (2 to a Bn)
Regiment - Field phones (3 to a Regt)

f. Disposition:
When last observed (4 Feb 51), 27th Div was approx 8km NW of PANGDOK-MYON (方德面) and approx 8km SSW of TAEHWA (太和) with 14th Regt and 2 other Regt in a line.

g. Morale:
High. Majority of the troops were well trained for fighting and were from MANCHURIA.

h. Evacuation and Treatment of Wounded:
Bn aid station was located approx 2km behind the lines and men with light wounds were treated there. Farmers were forced to care for the seriously wounded men such as carrying them to the Div aid station on stretchers. Div aid station was located approx 10km to the rear of the front lines.

i. Supply:
Each man carried 7 days rations and 200 rounds ammo for small arms. (PW insisted on this statement.)
Food was confiscated from civilians.
Small arms consisted of US M-1 rifles and carbines. Ammo was usually collected while advancing. PW did not know how the ammo was supplied otherwise.

j. Weapons Feared Most:
Napalm bomb.

k. Pay of Personnel:
Pvt - 50 won/month
Cpl - 50 won/month
Jr Sgt - 50 won/month
Sgt - 200 won/month
Pay in NK currency. Valued at 10 South Korean won per 1 North Korean won.

m. Former Unit History:
38th Div was organized in CHUNCH’ON (春川) 22 Sep 50. 38th Div consisted of only 200 men who were South Koreans. However, 38th Div was still part of NKA. Div retreated to IP’YONG (梨坪) and arrived on 28 Dec 50. While retreating, 38th Div assembled approx 300 stragglers (former unit unknown).
In IP’YONG (梨坪), 38th Div conscripted approx 150 civilians whose ages ranged from 18 - 35. These civilians had little military training.
On 8 Jan 51, 38th Div assembled all troops that retreated to IP’YONG (梨坪) and the approximate total was over 9,000. 38th Div was fully organized on 8 Jan 51.
On 1 Feb 51, in P’YONGCHANG (平昌), 3rd Regt of 38th Div was transferred to 27th Div and was called 14th Regt.
PW heard while the Bn CO and his staff was in conference that the 2nd Regt would be transferred to the 9th Div and the 1st Regt would be transferred to another Div. PW heard that the 38th Div would be deactivated in the near future.
n. Personalities: (former unit)
LEE, Pyon (FNU)(李), 29, Maj, CO, 1st Bn, 3rd Regt, 38th Div.
Height: 5’6” - Weight: 60kg - Slim - Complexion: Dark - Limps a little - Married - Last Seen: TAEHWA (大和) - 1 Feb 51.
A graduate of some military academy. Was in MANCHURIA.
A member of CCF. Returned to KOREA in Jul 50.

o. Morale of Former Unit:
Low. They were experienced men but feared death. They were not willing to fight.

p. Supply in Former Unit:
Each man carried 4 days rations and 150 rd of ammo for small arms.
PW observed one ammo dump located approx 8km NE of YANGGU (楊口) on or about 15 Jan 51 while advancing to P’YONGCHANG (平昌). It was located in a 15m deep valley running from E to NW. Height of the mountains in the vicinity was approx 150m.

q. UN PW:
When PW went to 14th Regt Hq as a messenger, he observed two American GI being interrogated by the Regt CO.
PW observed these 2 US PW 3 Feb 51. At this time, 14th Regt was located 6km E of TAEHWA (大和).
