FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS Special Report 022) 15 February 1951

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative but unintelligent. Memory fair. Reliability - Fair.

3. MARCHES:
a. The only defensive security measure taken by PW unit was concealment.
b. There was no definite time of march, but usually from dusk to dawn; approx from 1800 to 0600 next morning.
c. PW unit had taken mountain trails.
d. In the rear, PW unit moved by battalions, and when it approached the front, by companies.
PW unit used bugles as their means of communication between columns. If units were out of bugle range, messengers were then used.
e. 30 minute halts, for every 3 hours march were taken. No security measures provided.

4. BIVOUACS:
a. During air attack, unit was not allowed to move and men were required to stay in their fox-holes.
Against ground and tank attacks: During the day, unit always evaded contact. At night, 61mm (?) bazookas, LMG and 7.9 rifles were used. Each company had 3 bazookas, 9 LMG and one M-1 rifle or 7.9 rifle per rifleman.
b. One sentry was posted on each of the 4 corners.
c. Two meals a day (0700 and 1900). Slept and ate in fox-holes.
d. Fox-holes camouflaged with boughs were used as soon as sun broke out.
e. Tree branches and long grass were used as camouflage material.

5. ASSEMBLY FOR THE ATTACK:
a. Unit had no assembly area. (sic)

6. ASSAULT:
a. One company engaged in frontal attack, two other companies in flank attack with a mortar company 2km to the rear of the companies.
b. When the attack failed, they retreated as a unit.
c. When halted, they dug in.

7. SUPPLY:
a. Three bowlfuls of steamed kaoliang were given twice a day. All meals were prepared at approx 700m away from the bivouac area.
b. Every rifleman had 80 rd of ammunition. Ammunition was resupplied by Regt and stored for approx two days. Each company or platoon then drew its allotment approx 5km from the front.
c. Quilted jacket and trousers were issued. They were adequate. They were replaced by platoon leader within 2 weeks if lost or worn out.
d. Civilian clothing was not used.

8. COMMUNICATIONS:
a. PW saw no radio.
b. American type telephone was used in companies. Wire was reliable and sufficient.
c. Runners carried written messages if the distance was more than 3km. For short distances, verbal messages were carried.
d. Bugles were used as a signal of air attack.

9. TRAINING:
a. Received 3 months of training.
b. Normal training period was 3 months.
c. During training period, PW has actually fired, using live ammunition once per month.
d. All training was conducted in rear areas.
e. Three rounds of ammunition used in actual firing.

10. MEDICAL:
a. Saw no disease.
b. Every two weeks, PW had immunization. Type unknown.
c. PW unit had no frostbites or frozen feet.

11. AIR COVER:
Troops of company strength were able to conceal themselves from the air.

12. DISCIPLINE:
Discipline well maintained.
Saw no desertions.

13. RELATIONS WITH KOREANS:
Attitude of North Korean civilians was good towards the CCF.
CCF used Korean civilians for reconstruction of bridges and roads.
