FIELD REPORT (2 Div - LDI - 0133) 8 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: KANG Chung Hyon (ROK)

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and information seemed fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
Source was a former ROK soldier. 25 Nov 50, he and 1,000 other ROK soldiers were captured by a CCF unit at ■■I■N and o/a 30 Nov 50, were transferred to a NKA unit. From 1 Dec 50 to 11 Dec 50, were indoctrinated in Communism 7 hr daily. Heard from a NK soldier that UN prisoners were sent to CHINA.
When unit moved south to vic HOENGSONG, escaped 5 Feb 51 and immediately surrendered.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. T/O & E And Strength:
During captivity, received training from the NKA and his Plat Ldr told him on 22 Jan 51 that elements of the 6th Div were the 617th, 621st and 121st Units(formerly 657, 661 and 659). These units were not called Regt, although they were of Regt size.
Strength of 617th unit was about 1100 men and approx one-third were former ROK soldiers. Observed the following weapons in 2nd Bn: 2x80mm mortars (150 rd per), 4 HMG, 2 LMG per Co, 3 PPSH per Plat (1 magazine plus 300 rd per) and all others carried Russian rifles (150-200 rd ea).
121st and 621st Units had the same type and number of weapons. The 617th Unit CP was located approx 10 km N of HOENGSONG. (Heard from Plat Ldr 20 Jan 51.) Was with unit until 5 Feb 51 and did not move during that period. During the same period (20 Jan 51-5 Feb 51), the 2nd Bn CP was located approx 8 km N of HOENGSONG.
6th Div had been at rest since 9 Jan 51 and was preparing for general offensive (4th phase of operation). Each rifle man was issued 300 rd of ammo plus 10 hand grenades. Heard from his Co CO that the 6th Div was expecting some tanks and arty before the offensive begins.

b. Clothing:
Everyone in 6th Div wore winter uniforms.

c. Medical:
Neither saw nor heard of any contagious diseases. Many men in 2nd Bn suffered from frostbite.

d. Food:
Food found in villages was sufficient.

e. Morale:
Morale was high in the unit for the men believed the propaganda.
