FIELD REPORT (2 Div - TDI - 0132) 8 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 0900 hr 6 Feb 51 at 10 km N of HOENGSONG

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative in answering questions and information seems reliable.
Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
O/a 31 Jan 51, 38th Div, 2nd Regt, 2nd Bn, consisting of 200 man transferred to 12th Div approx 8 km S of HONGCHON. Other elements of 38th Div were also there.
Personnel were divided into 3 groups and assigned to 1st, 2nd and 3rd Bn. On the same day PW and 36 others went to look for 1st Bn located approx 12 km S of HONGCHON and arrived the same day.
2 Feb 51, 3rd Co consisting of 55 men received orders to set up a defense line approx 8 km N of HOENGSONG.
5 Feb 51, attacked by ROK and withdrew to HONGCHON, but PW was separated from the unit about 10 km N of HOENGSONG.
Observed 2nd Regt Hq 31 Jan 51 in NAM-MYON, 5 km S of HONG-CHON.
O/a 31 Jan 51 heard that, 6th and 7th Div were located on their left flank (east).
O/a 31 Jan 51 heard from ass’t Sqd Ldr that strength of 1st Bn of 2nd Regt, 12th Div is 170 men.
Weapons of 38th Div as of 31 Jan 51: 1-2 x 82mm mortars in each Bn (30 rd per), 1 HMG in each Bn (5-600 rd per), 1 LMG in each Co (500 rd) and all personnel had rifle (200-250 rd).
Weapons of 12th Div as of 4 Feb 51: 3 x 82mm mortars in Mortar Co (25 rd per), 2 HMG in HMG Co, 1 LMG in each Co (4-500 rd per), 7 PPSH SMG in each Plat (400 rd) and all personnel had US M1 rifles (150-200 rd ea) and 2 or 3 US carbines in each Co. No ammo received after crossing 38th Parallel.
2 Feb 51 heard from 3rd Co Political Section CO that they are in the 4th phase and mission of 12th Div is to occupy WONJU area.

b. Food Supply:
Obtained from villages and received 2 meals a day.

c. Clothing:
All in winter uniforms and shoes.

d. Medical:
Approx 4 men from each Plat are suffering from frostbite.
1 Feb heard from Plat Ldr that they have to be very careful about sanitation, because there are contagions diseases in other Co.

e. Morale:
Seems to be high, because they believe that they will win this war and believe in Communistic ideals, However, morale of soldiers who are formerly from SK and were forced to join NKA, is very low, because they are worried about their relatives in SK.
