ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO 3598　26 February 1951

FIELD REPORT (2 Div - LDI - 0124)　8 February 1951

Due to close liaison between Recon Sqd and Bn Hq, was intrusted with information containing disposition of troops. Seems well informed and was able to answer all questions intelligently. Information received seems fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

PW was in charge of squad of rifleman (total 17 men), dispatched to HOENGSONG 1 Feb 51, to reconnoiter the number and position of enemy tanks. They were also ordered to destroy any tanks if situation permitted. The following day about 0100 hr, they were spotted and engaged. PW was wounded by a hand grenade fragment and left behind. He managed to hid in a house and stayed for 3 days before he was captured by a UN patrol.

According to briefing given by the Bn Cmdr 1 Feb 51, prior to departure to HOENGSONG, the disposition of the 6th Div was as follows: 6th Div Hq with attached Arty Bn, Sig Bn, Engr Bn, Med Bn, Recon Co and Defense Co located at MOKHAE (DS1759).

661st Unit (2nd Regt), located 6 km W of CHUDONG-NI (DS 1457) at HASAMBAE (DS1257) and SANGSABAE (DS 1258).

659th Unit (1st Regt), located 8 km E of CHUDONG-NI (DS1457) at KOPCHON-MYON (DS2754).

657th Unit (3rd Regt) strength 1300 men, located at CHUDONG-NI (DS1457).

2nd Bn Hq of 657th Unit (strength 276 men) and its 5 Co; the 4th, 5th, 6th, Mortar and Hv Wpn Co located at TAEGWANDAE-RI (DS 1556), 2 km S of CHUDONG-NI.

1st Bn and 3rd Bn of the 657th Unit at SAMGORI (DS1757).

On left flank of the 6th Div between HOENGSONG and KANGNUNG (DS 9171), the 7th Div was situated.

At KOPCHON-MYON, PODO-RI and unk attached units of the II Corps was situated.

PW was told, also, by the Recon Officer that replacements were at the 3rd Regt Hq, from the deactivated 38th and 43rd Div.

During his patrol to HOENGSONG, was told by one of his men who had just came from the Regt Hq, that the Div tactics were to draw in UN troops by withdrawing portion of own troops and then with the main body surround and hold line while the retreating elements counter attacked.

2nd Bn: 2 HMG, 3 LMG per plat, 2 X 82 mm mortars, 2 X 14.5 anti-tank rifles and all armed with either PPSH SMG (500 rd ea), Russian rifles (100 rd ea), or Rifles (80 rd ea).

e. Clothing: All issued winter uniforms.

f. Physical Condition: Good.

g. Medical: 20% bled when defecating.

High, because they believed that in their 4th phase, they would have air, Arty and tank support.
