FIELD REPORT (2 Div - LDI - 0120) 8 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: KIM Myong Yong
AGE: 23

DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 061400 Feb 51 at MASIL (8 km NW of ANHONG)

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative but not very intelligent. He seemed cautious in answering questions but information seems to be fairly reliable.
Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
When unit moved out 5 Feb 51 at MASIL, PW and 2 others were ill, so were left behind. ROK soldiers entered the town and took the 3 men into custody.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. T/O & E And Strength:
9th Div composed of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Regt and attached were an Arty Bn, Engr Bn, Signal Bn and a Medical unit. Strength of the Div and its attached units estimated to be about 3,000. Originally there were 5,000 men but the Div suffered heavy casualties and received few replacements as of 25 Jan 51. Heard that 2 replacement Bn joined the 9th Div at vic of ANHUNG and were assigned to various Regt.
Arty Bn consisted of 110 men and the following weapons were observed in the Bn: 1 LMG (500 rd), 15 PPSH SMG (2 magazines ea), 20 rifles (30-100 rd ea), 5 US carbines (2-3 magazines 15 rd ea), remaining men carried Russian rifles (80-100 rd ea). There were no mortars in the Bn.
Arty Bn was part of an Arty Regt during the early part of the war but when they retreated north during the UN offensive, they abandoned their pieces. Although unit is called an Arty Bn, they have no Arty nor are they expecting any.
Strength of 1st Regt of the 9th Div was estimated to be about 7-800. Weapons observed in the 1st Regt were 3x82mm mortars (20 rd ea), 4 HMG (1,000 rd ea), 1 LMG per Plat (3-500 rd ea), 1 PPSH SMG per sqd (2 magazines ea), 2 rifles per sqd (80-100 rd ea), all other men were armed with Russian rifles (80-100 rd ea).
2nd Regt had the same type and amount of weapons but in the 3rd Regt were limited to 3x82mm mortars (10 rd ea), 3 HMG (800 rd ea), 2 LMG per Co (ammo unk), 4 PPSH SMG per Plat (1 magazine ea) and others carried Russian rifles (50 rd ea). Heard that majority of the men in the 3rd Regt were replacements.

b. Unit Assignment and Intention:
O/a 1 Feb 51 heard from Political Ldr that the NKA 27th Div was located approx 8 km S of SOMUN DONG (DS3753).
5 Feb 51, heard from his Co CO that the 9th Div was going to PYONCHANG (DS4735) to set up defense positions and cut the MSR from ANHUNG to YONGWOL.

c. Clothing:
Only 10% of the men in the 9th Div wore winter uniforms.

d. Medical:
About 10 men from the Arty Bn were hospitalized for influenza. Neither heard of nor saw any typhus or typhoid patients.
About 10% of the men in the Div were suffering from frostbite. Majority of the men were in poor health.

e. Food:
Received no food supply but food found in villages was sufficient.

f. Morale:
Morale of the men was very low, for they were all tired and could not sleep in villages. Besides, the men knew that their weapons were inferior to those of the UN Forces.
