ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 3577　26 February 1951

FIELD REPORT (528 LDI - 0183)　8 February 1951

PW appeared to be in good physical condition at time of interrogation. PW was a farmer prior to conscription. Cooperative and information obtained is considered fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

47th Div composed of 1st, 2nd and 3rd Regt, Arty Unit, and Com Unit. 2nd Regt composed of 3 Inf Bn, Arty Unit, Com Unit, Engr Unit, and Trans Unit. 3rd Bn composed of 3 Rifle Co, Arty Sect, 82mm Mortar Plat, Com Plat, Trans Plat, Med Plat, HMG Plat, and Engr Plat. 2nd Co composed of 3 Rifle Plat. 2nd Plat composed of 3 rifle sqd.

PW Plat received 6 casualties from UN arty barrage 7 Feb 51 and one casualty at P’YONGYANG about a month ago.

2nd Co, 3rd Bn had one HMG, 6 LMG, approx 70 rifles, and 9 SMG.

Bn AT Plat had 5 AT rifles.

Bn 82mm mortar Plat had 5-6 x 82mm mortars.

Bn Transp Plat had 7 oxcarts.

Bn HMG Plat had 10 HMG.

PW Bn was better equipped than the other Bn.

PW was told by the 3rd Bn CO, o/a 5 Feb 51, at vic ANYANG (CS1640) that 3rd Bn must defend its present position (vic ANYANG) to the last man.

2nd Co was to defend a hill approx 8 km NE of ANYANG.

2nd Co was located approx 2 km NE of ANYANG on a hill when PW was captured. (080700 Feb 51)

As of 081100 Feb 51, 2nd Regt CP was located approx 2km north of 2nd Co, dug in on a hill.

3rd Bn CP was located near the 2nd Co.

KO, Un Bong (高雲奉) Maj - CO, 3rd Bn, 2nd Regt, 47th Div

PW observed one 57mm (Sic) arty piece and 2 howitzers (type unk) while crossing the HAN River (location unk) o/a 5 Jan 51. Each arty piece was pulled by one horse.

Morale of his unit was extremely low due to the following reasons:

(1) Weapons were insufficient.

(2) Lack of training.

(3) Severe artillery and air bombardments.

(4) Many read and believed the leaflets dropped by UN Forces.

Conscripted into the NKA 27 Sep 50 at SINUIJU. Assigned to the 18th Div, 70th Regt, 2nd Co where he spent approx 20 days doing guard duty. Arrived at KUSONG (XE9228) o/a 1 Nov 50, where PW was reassigned to his present unit. Crossed the CHONGCHON River and arrived YONGBYON (YE4011) o/a 10 Nov 50. Passed SINANJU (YD 2486) (date unk) and arrived P’YONGYANG o/a 3 Dec 50. Stayed approx 10 days at P’YONGYANG and obtained unk number of HMG and 82mm mortars. Marched southward and arrived at SARIWON (YC4065) o/a 25 Dec 50. Headed west to SINCHON (YC1747) and without staying, returned to SARIWON o/a 3 Jan 51. Passed SEOUL and crossed the HAN River o/a 15 Jan 51 and arrived at PUPYON (BS9956) on the same day. Moved to vic of ANYANG o/a 5 Feb 51 and PW was captured 8 Feb 51.

Food supplies were procured locally. PW was fed an average of twice a day. Food and ammo supplies were insufficient. PW received 200 rd of rifle ammo at SINUIJU o/a 4 Oct 50 and 2 handgrenades at PUPYON o/a 2 Feb 51.

PW dug approx 24 holes for AT mines approx 2 km West of PUPYON (BS9956) along the highway between PUPYON and INCHON, however, PW did not actually observe the mines.

PW received an immunization at P’YONGYANG o/a 6 Dec 50 (type unk). Frostbites were common among the troops but due to shortage of medical supplies, very little treatment was given.

Crossed the HAN River o/a 15 Jan 51 near PUPYON (BS9956) over the ice. No special river crossing equipment was observed.

PW unit was never subjected to night bombing.

PW Unit is a reconstituted unit which was organized at KUSONG o/a 1 Nov 50. Majority of the troops were recruits. The remainder were remnants of various units. PW was previously interrogated by the 25th Div IPW Team.
