FIELD REPORT (163 - MISDI - 0284) 12 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW cooperative during interrogation. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Mission: O/a 4 Feb 51, 25th and 29th Regt assembled at KIRANMYON (DR 9218). Took different route South. 29th Regt mission was to cut UN MSR. (Constructed 4 road blocks vicinity of CHUSAN MYON (DR 8110); attack ROK police box and guard posts; engage in fire-fight with UN Forces wherever and whenever situation permitted. Final objective was PUSAN.

b. Strength of Unit: (as of 10 Feb 51 at CHUNSAN MYON)
29th Regt - approx 320
2nd Bn - approx 96
4th Co - approx 30
Code Name: 4th Co of 2nd Bn - “HAE JU JURYOK” (海州主力). Members of 4th Co also wore white cloth armband at night.

c. Chronology:
23 Sept 50 - Entered ROK Army at TAEGU. Unit: 2nd Sqd, 3rd Plat, 2nd Co, 2nd Bn, 2nd Div, 1103rd Combat Engineers Group, 107th Combat Engineers.
22 Jan 51 - Captured by NK 29th Regt at ANDONG, INDONG MYON (DR 9649). ROK, 3rd Plat, was then spearheading attack for 2nd Bn at INDONG MYON (DR 9649). 2nd Bn retreated. Saw 2 WIA, 96 ROK taken PW. PW were questioned whether they preferred to join NK army or be sent home. PW volunteered. PW later saw 3 other ROK volunteer in his squad. Ones who requested return were reeducated and later joined army (1st M-P-4590 and 4591). 29th Regt CP on hill vicinity of INDONG MYON (DR 9649).
23 Jan 51 - 0700 29th Regt arrived KIRAN MYON (DR9218). 25th, 27th Regt, and 10th Div Hq assembled here 25-26 Jan 51. 1300 hr subjected to air strike, 1200-1700 hr engaged firefight with ROK troops and police. PW saw 4 WIA but presumes they suffered more casualties.
27 Jan 51 - First assault on ROK unit vicinity of KIRANMYON by 29th Regt. Second assault being successful took village (approximately 40 houses) 28 Jan 51. Here 10th Div recuperated 28-30 Jan 51. Disposition of 25th, 27th Regt unknown.
4 Feb 51 - 10th Div and 25th, 27th, 29th Regt assembled vicinity of OKSAN MYON (DR 8637).
5 Feb 51 - 29th Regt arrived CHUNSAN MYON, CHIUM (DR 8510), taking mountain trails travelling South. Passed KONGGOK (DR 8615), HYOLTONG (DR 8613).
6 Feb 51 - Unit arrived KOROMYON, TAPPYONG (DR 8702). 1300-1500 hr received air strafing, Napalm bombing and rocket shelling. 1600-1900 hr firefight with UN troops. 1 WIA, 3 MIA in unit. UN troops withdrew from area. 1st Bn of 29th Regt (strongest Bn in 29th Regt) held position. Remaining elements assembled at CHIUM (DR 8510) 7 Feb 51.
8 Feb 51 - 29th Regt attacked ROK police at TUNGPYONG (DR 8309). Took 5 ROK Police PW, 1 HMG (250 rd).
9 Feb 51 - (1200 hr) Surprise attack by Un troops led by 3 tanks dispersed the unit in confusion, part to mountain N of village, others to CHIUM and 4th Co to OHGCHON (DR 8110)
10 Feb 51 - Surrendered to ROK police.

d. Weapons and Equipment: 4th Co of 2nd Bn, 29th Regt:
HMG - 2 approx 500 rd
LMG - 1
75mm Mortar - 1 (in Bn)
PPSh SMG - 4 200 rd per MG
M1 Rifles - 4 40 rd per M1 Rifle
Russian rifles - No. unknown 20 rd per rifle
Grenades - 2 per man
Field glass - 1
Telephone - 1
Wireless - 1 (captured from ROK unit)

e. Status of Supply; Route of Supply:
No resupply of ammo, and clothing.
Secured food from villagers; took shelter in villages and in mountains.

f. Other Units:
Last assembly area of 25th and 27th Regt at OKSANMYON (DR 8687) 4 Feb 51. Mission unknown.

g. Foreign Elements:
8 Feb 51 Regt adjutant told men 9,000 (?). CCF airplanes will support them, 9 Feb 51. PW did not see any.

h. Morale:
Majority had high fighting spirit, especially among the communists. 2/3 of the troops in 29th Regt were leftists.

I. Weapon feared most:
Feared Arty barrage, said bombing was fairly accurate.

j. Tactics:
29th Regt is noted for its envelopment operations.

k. NK Propaganda:
PW carried propaganda pamphlets which were posted in villages. They read: “Three Cheers for the People’s Army” “Three Cheers for KIM IL SUNG” (NK President).

l. UN PW:
PW also heard from comrades that 29th Regt had captured 10 UN PW.
