FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MIDI - 0252) 6 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Of average intelligence, PW was cooperative. PW seemed fairly certain as to what he was saying. Information believed to be reliable. Recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
14 Aug 50, PW was conscripted into the 598th Construction Unit at P’YONGYANG and commissioned a Jr Lt. Left P’YONGYANG 14 Aug 50, arriving at PONGHWA (DR8482) in early Sep 50, where trenches were dug in the surrounding mountains, until early Oct 50, at which time, the 598th Unit was ordered to KODANJIN (BA5948). Arrived during early Nov 50. Built about 12 houses for housing both Russian and Chinese ambassadors and for army commanders. PW did not see any of them but heard from his CO that these house were for them.
3 Jan 51, the 578th Unit was ordered to KANG-DONG (BU4936) arriving 9 Jan 51. 29 Jan 51, were ordered to SORONG-NI, about 12 Km SW of P’YONGYANG, where the 598th Unit was deactivated and its personnel reassigned. PW and 31 others were assigned to the 3rd Co of the 973rd Transportation Unit in SORONG-NI. 26 Jan 51, he hauled gas in drums from YONGSONG station 8 Km N of P’YONGYANG, to SORONG-NI. 20 Jan 51, PW and 3 others trucked ammo from the KAN-NI station (RR station next and N of the SEIHO station (YD3629) to SHINCHON tunnel, on the southern outskirts of SEOUL, arriving 29 Jan 51. While checking the fuel of his truck preparatory to trip back to SORONG-NI, he ignited the gas tank with an open flame lamp, causing the ammo to explode. PW deserted intending to surrender to the UN Forces because he feared the punishment that awaited him should he be captured.
On 011700 Feb 51, he was captured at HOWKOGAE.

b. Organization and Strength:
973rd Transportation Unit was composed of 4 Co. It was responsible to the Transportation Bureau which in turn received its orders from the rear main Hq.
In the 3rd Co, there were 26 officers and 5 enlisted men (Sic). Attached to each Co was a transportation unit that dispatched trucks and drivers. The officers in the 973rd Transportation Unit noted as officers in charge of vehicles and load while hauling materiel.

c. Status of Arms, Ammunition, Equipment:
Daily, 4 trucks are dispatched to the KAN-NI station to transport ammo to SHINCHON tunnel. Transported 12.7mm, 45mm, and 82mm shells. The SHINCHON tunnel consisted of 2 separate tunnels, parallel to each other, and believes both are filled with war materiel. One of the tunnels was destroyed when the ammo on his truck exploded.
25 and 26 of Jan 51, PW transported gas from YONG SONG station to SORONG-NI in 160 Kg drums. The drums were placed in a ditch, and camouflaged with straw. 1 truck daily transported gas for the 3rd Co.
PW heard from his Co CO that the 3rd Co had about 100 3/4 ton ZIS trucks. PW has not seen all the trucks because most of them were transporting ammo. Those he saw were all second-hand.

d. Deployment of Unit:
The 3rd Co CP was located in SORONG-NI; the 973rd Transportation Unit and the Rear Main Hq were located in P’YONGYANG as of 27 Jan 51.

e. Deployment of Other Units:
PW heard from a soldier in the Transportation Bureau that the other 3 companies were in the P’YONGYANG area and that one was located in SUNAN (YD3242).
PW saw what was believed a GHQ located 6 Km NE of P’YONGYANG at KUAMDONG (YD4535) because the guards were a special type uniform.
PW also saw a political section headquarters located 2 Km N of the GHQ.
He heard from a soldier that a Repl Ctr was located 2 Km N of the political section headquarters.
28 Jan 51, observed an estimated 20,000 CCF troops marching south towards SEOUL from P’YONGYANG walking on both sides of the road in a single file. These troops were armed with small arms only.

f. Personalities:

g. Mission and Intention:
To transport war material.

h. Russian Advisors:
While passing through MANP’OJIN enroute to KOSANKIN in North Korea, he observed 2 Russian officers riding through town in a jeep.

I. UN PW:
At MANP’OJIN, in North Korea, he observed about 200 US prisoners. They were marching in an easterly direction.

j. CCF:
PW heard from his Co CO in January that the CCF Armies are resting and waiting for ammunition. After the ammunition is received they were to fight again and their plans called for the complete liberation of KOREA by Mar 51.
