2. ASSESSMENT:
PW uneducated, cooperative, uninformed. Memory fair. Reliability - Fair.

3. AA:
a. Radar:
(1) One cable 1” diameter led underground from radar/computer (?) to vertical-horizontal range and fuse setting indicator of 85mm guns. (see sketch)
(2) This radar unit was able to locate 5 or 6 aircraft.
(3) Radar unit was able to located aircraft thru cloud banks.
(4) Radar unit was approx 50m from guns.
(5) Radar unit was set on lower terrain than gun positions.
(6) One radar unit per four 85mm AA guns.
(7) Radar unit was used during trial fire.

b. 85mm AA Gun:
(1) Gun model - 85mm AA gun.
(2) Ammo head painted yellow.
(3) Velocity of 85mm shells - 800m/sec.
(4) 4 x 85mm guns per platoon.
(5) Seven men assigned to each 85mm gun.
(6) Gun crew duties as follows:
(a) Gun crew chief.
(b) Vertical range operator.
(c) Horizontal range operator.
(d) Fuse setter.
(e) Gunner.
(f) Ammo carrier.
(g) Ammo carrier.
(7) Guns transported by vehicles.
(8) Type of fuse unknown. At base of head were numbers (range unknown) said to determine burst time.
(9) Maximum range of shells - 10,500m.
(10) PW heard that 85mm gun can be used against tanks.
(11) During mal-function, CO prohibited further activities on the gun.
(12) All shell bursts were behind the plane.
(13) Crew was alerted to post by whistles.
(14) 85mm gun was laid manually.

c. Ammunition:
Approx 34” x 4.5” bottlenecked, pin fire, brass projectile, tip painted yellow. Approx length of shell 25”. Approx length of projectile 9”. Base diameter of projectile approx 3.5”. Approx weight of one round 26kg. Burst period mechanism at base of projectile.

d. 85mm Gun:
Called 85mm AA gun. Approx length of barrel 15 ft, mounted on 4 wheel carriage. Dimensions of carriage 10 ft x 6 ft (approx) with pneumatic tires, approx diameter 3 ft, furnished with coupling for being pulled by truck. Operation of 85mm AA gun - manual. Loaded manually.

e. Radar Scanning Antenna:
No information. (Note: Radar equipment operated only by Lt (中尉). No one allowed in vicinity. One set appeared to operate all 4 guns in the platoon emplacement.

f. Gun Emplacements:
Placed in holes approx 5.5 ft deep; one end inclined. Placed 50m apart in a square. Spacing between each platoon unknown.

g. Operation of 85mm AA Gun:
Four AA guns operated by one radar set relaying angles to indicator panel of each gun electrically.
Vertical traverse - 3° - 82° inclusive.
Horizontal traverse - 360°
Fuse setting: Indicated electrically but set manually when round is in chamber.
Vertical and horizontal traverse of each gun manually set by gun crew to coincide with setting estimated by radar set.
Maximum vertical range - 10,500m (according to instructors).

h. T/O & E:
Company Approx 150 men (CO was Lt) (中尉)
Platoon Approx 50 men (CO was a Jr Lt) (小尉)
Squad Approx 14 men (Sr NCO was Sgt) (上士)
Four squads composed a platoon.
One 85mm AA gun per squad.
