2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and of average intelligence but uninformed. Reliability - Fair.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
15 Aug 50: Conscripted into the Volunteer Army at SEOUL. Received 20 days basic training with 1,500 others.
5 Sep 50: Departed SEOUL to point unknown. 200 men received basic training.
27 Sep 50: Retreated.
10 Oct 50: Bypassed CH’ORWON (鉄原). Arrived CHIP’ONI (芝浦里).
12 Oct 50: 31st Div organized here. Assigned to the 1st Sqd, 3rd Plat, 1st Co, 5th Bn. 2nd Regt. 31st Div as private. After organization, 31st Div was assigned battle positions for 10 days at point 2 km NW of CHIP’ORI.
22 Oct 50: Defense position moved into CHIP’ONI for three days.
25 Oct 50: Received orders to retreat.
9 Nov 50: Arrived CHANGJIN (長津). 600 men assembled here and 2nd Bn, 3rd Co, 2nd Plat reorganized.
10 Nov 50: Departed.
17 Nov 50: Arrived PONGSAN-NI (鳳山里). II Corps, 31st Div reorganized here. Assigned to the 3rd Sqd, 2nd Plat, 1st Co, 2nd Bn, 3rd Regt, 31st Div.
20 Nov 50: Moved southward by Bn.
16 Dec 50: 31st Div assembled at KUMHWA (金化).
20 Dec 50: Arrived HWACH’ON (樺川). Engaged ROK forces, retreated by Bn.
15 Jan 51: Arrived YONGCH’UN (永春). After 3 days retreated again to NAM-MYON (南面) where 2nd Bn defeated again by US Army. During the battles of HWACH’ON and NAM-MYON, approx 2/3 of Bn became casualties.
6 Feb 51: Arrived P’YONGCH’ANG (平昌). Vicinity of UIDONG (kanji unknown).
9 Feb 51: Captured.

c. Unit History:
12 Oct 50 - 31st Div, II Corps was organized at CHIP’ONI (芝浦里). It consisted of three inf regt, an artillery bn, one AA co attached to each bn.
17 Nob 50, 31st Div was reorganized at PONGSAN-NI (鳳山里).

d. Disposition:
When last observed (6 Feb 51), 2nd Bn of 3rd Regt was located in vicinity of P’YONGCH’ANG (平昌).

e. Intentions:
To infiltrate behind UN lines and cut off supply routes.

f. Morale:
Low due to lack of supply, warm clothing and medicines.

g. Replacements:
No replacements were received after 12 Oct 50.

h. Evacuation and Treatment of Wounded:
Wounded were left to die.

i. Supply:
Each man carried three or four days ration and 30 to 40 rounds of ammo. Ammunition and weapons were picked up from dead personnel. Each man carried two to three hand grenades, and two anti-tank grenades.

j. Weapons Feared Most:
(1) Strafing
(2) Napalm bomb
(3) Artillery

k. Epidemics:
There were frequent typhus cases in the 31st Div.
