ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 3527　23 February 1951

FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MISD - 0270)　10 February 1951

PW cooperative during interrogation. Although in Regt S-4 he was assigned to Co food supply, therefore information was limited, but is considered reliable. Recommended for further interrogation.

On 27 Oct 50, 450th Regt crossed the YALU River at ANTUNG, MANCHURIA arriving at SINUIJU the same day. Proceeded southward via PAKCH’ON, SUKCHON, SARIWON, KAESONG and arrived SEOUL 15 Jan 51. The same day crossed the HAN River over the ice. The Regt by-passed SUWON and arrived OSAN 17 Jan 51. Regt stayed for 7 or 8 days after which the combat units moved to vicinity of KUMYANGJANG-NI while non-combatant elements moved to join the combat unit at KUMYANGJANG-NI. 1 Feb 51, Regt withdrew to TAEJON-NI (CS423395) due to overwhelming UN pressure. While procuring food in the village. PW deserted his unit 051000 Feb 51. After spending one night in mountain and 2 days at a farm house, PW surrendered.

50th Army Hq had a staff section, political section, rear echelon section (supply section), and a medical sec.

50th Army, strength unk, composed of the 148th, 149th, 150th Div. Div Hq organized similar to Army Hq.

The 150th Div (strength unk), composed of the 448th, 449th, 450th Regt and a mountain gun bn.

The 450th Regt strength was approx 1400 men and composed of 3 Inf Bn, 82mm Mortar Co, 50mm Mortar Co, Security Co, Signal Co, Recon Plat and Supply Section which consisted of arms & ammunition, clothing, finance and food sections.

Each Bn composed of 3 rifle companies and heavy weapons co and each rifle co had 3 rifle plat and 30mm mortar platoon.

5 Feb 51, 450th Regt CP was located at TAEJON-NI (CS423395). On his way to MONG-NI on 060300 Feb 51, he noticed the 450th Regt CP and the Bn which were deployed along the high ground N of the road from MONG-NI to (CS432394) were withdrawn. PW did not know the destination of the Regt upon its withdrawal.

050400 Feb 51, at TAEJON-NI (CS423395), he met a soldier of the 3rd Bn 449th Regt and was told the 450th Regt was withdrawing 5 Feb 51 and the 3rd Bn 449th Regt withdrawing 5 Feb from a point 3 km South.

PW has no knowledge of the equipment of the mountain gun Bn, but had heard from a political advisor that the guns were brought to KOREA. PW also heard that 82mm Mortar and Mt Guns were used at TAEJON-NI.

450th Regt was armed with about 8x82mm Mortar (ammunition unk), approx 20x60mm Mortars (ammo unk), HMG, LMG, Jap 38 Rifles and 2 grenades per man.

3 Feb 51, PW observed 9 horse wagon loads of ammo and food at TAEJON-NI

Nov 50 at NAMSI-DONG, all personnel of the 450th Regt were issued one overcoat.

1 Feb 51, at TAEJON-NI, all were issued one pair fur-lined boots and one pair woolen socks, made in MANCHURIA.

O/a 1 Feb 51, at TAEJON-NI, PW heard from a ration officer that the RR line between SINUIJU and SEOUL is in process of repairs and that as soon as completed, supplies will be brought from MANCHURIA on trains which will be afforded air coverage.

Since 10 Dec 50, Div or Regt Supply Sec did not transport or supply any food, therefore food has been procured locally. Troops were fed 1/3 lb average twice daily. Mostly rice and corn.

450th Regt procured food as they could in vicinity TAEJON-NI and as of 5 Feb 51, the Security Co had 5 days ration, however, the Regt had enough rations for only two more days.

Mission of the 150th Div when it moved south of HAN River, was to form a forward defense while other units reorganized in the rear to launch a spring offensive, however, immediately prior to desertion he heard from the supply officer that the spring offensive had started.

Morale of the 450th Regt is average.

4 days after crossing the YALU River, PW heard from the Regt political officer that an artillery division was present in KOREA. He has not seen any such division.

A large number of leaflets fell in PW Regt area, however, the majority of the men were uncertain as to whether or not to believe what was written on them. Higher ranking officers do not believe the leaflets. The lower ranking officers are divided in their opinions regarding their beliefs.

Surrender leaflet reveal “Surrender now or it will be too late”. These have a bad effect on those who wanted to surrender, but did not have the opportunity because they felt that when they should find an opportunity to surrender it would be too late.

Language in the leaflet is vulgar. Those who can read are usually of a higher intellectual plane thus they should be worded on a higher plane.

167th Div was CNA unit which surrendered to the 50th CCF Army and later integrated into the 50th Army, however, PW was assigned to the 167th Div Aug 50 after graduating military academy, therefore he is not a former member of the CNA. PW claims that 90 percent of the officers in the 150th Div are former officers in the CNA.

O/a 10 Jan 51, PW heard from the Regt political officer that the asst Regt Commander departed for HUA■TEN, MANCHURIA o/a 8 Jan 51 for the purpose of liaison and that a large number of airplanes will participate in the spring offensive.

PW learned from a CCF newspaper that the 1st CCF Field Army was located in northwest CHINA. The 2nd CCF Field Army participated in the Tibet Campaign since Oct 50. The 3rd Field Army is located along the coast preparing for an attack on FORMOSA.
